From Kansas
« on: November 07, 2023, 08:10:58 PM »
Hi all, I have been scouring these threads for a while now while rebuilding / modifying a 1978 CB550 K4.  It had sat for about thirty years when I bought it (for too much), but only has a little under 5k miles on it.  So far I have pulled the carbs, de-racked them, completely cleaned and rebuilt them and am happy with the way they turned out.  Set them up as best as I could guess for K&N style filters and a 4into1.  We will see how well I guessed when I start it for the first time in 30 years here in a week or so.  In the middle of several projects: brake MC, tank coating (aftermarket, the original was rusted through), electronic ignition, new clutch plates, etc.

Anyway, I have enjoyed this forum but am at the point where I may need to ask a few questions and post a few photos as opposed to just browsing and searching.

Welcome aboard BigAl from NH.
Go to the project shop section and start a thread on your bike, include pictures(we love pictures!) and description of how it looked when you got it and work done so far. Update it as you go and keep your questions in that thread so everything is together.  Be sure to hit the notify button so you get an email when someone replies back to answer questions (on this forum it isn't an automatic that you get rely emails unless you click to get replies). Also save the link to your favorites on your browser so don't loose it and can find it easier.
The 550 is a fun bike, good power to weight ratio. Have fun bringing it back to life!

Thank you for the warm welcome!  I'll head over the the project shop section and start a build thread.  I believe that I will need to post a few more times before I can post a pic, but that shouldn't be too hard to muster.

I have done quite a bit of auto mechanics / classic car restoration, but have owned and maintained a bike since I was but a wee lad (Kansas farm boy).  Apart from some upgrades to my daily driver (VTX 1300 R), this will be my first foray into the depths of motorcycle rebuilding.  I can do carbs all day long, but I know NOTHING about front forks.  So I will have a comfort level with some things and will ask stupid questions about others.  I'm a decent metal fabricator and should be able to cut and weld as needed (although it won't be the prettiest bead you have seen on this forum).

Again, thanks for the welcome.

If you can do carbs, the rest will be a piece of cake!

But dont buy the cheap aftermarket carb kits or you may find yourself chasing your tail trying to tune it.
