650 cam with a 550 tach?

Ok, so hear me out before you stone me...

 As many of you know at this point because of the sheer amount of obnoxious questions I ask incessantly about the project I'm in the middle of, with the 650 cam I'm putting in my 550, I know it will not work with a 550 tach, so I did order the new tach drive. I know the tach drive fits in the stock housing. I also know that the tachometer does not fit inside of the receptacle for the 550 if I were to get a 650 tach…

What if I hook the 650 tach drive/cable up to the 550 tach? I understand the calibration will be different. I think I've seen the calibrated operational ratios on the forum before, I don't remember exactly what they were but I know that they will not sync up properly. it will however have something functioning in the meantime and prevent me from having inop things capped off all over the place...

I also know that I can ride a bike and listen to what it wants, what it likes, when it's winding too high, etc. What will be the end result if I hook the 650 cam tach drive cable up to the 550 tach? Rather than capping it off and having a loose cable hanging? Aside from an inaccurate tach reading, will it destroy the tach? Or is inaccuracy in calibration all we're looking at?  That's basically my question, will it just give an inaccurate reading, or will it actually destroy the tach?  To my knowledge the only difference is the gear ratio on the drive...

Stoning was what we did last year,
 this year I believe we are on to Drawing and Quartering…
A much more visceral and horrifying way to die.
Stoning one good hit to the head and you are knocked out or dead…


CB750 and CB650 tach ratios are the same…you could fit the CB750 tachometer…

You could always provide the stonee with a helmet. That might prolong the agony a smidge.

CB750 and CB650 tach ratios are the same…you could fit the CB750 tachometer…

Good to know. Are the case sizes the same?

The 750 and the 550 tachs have the same case size. I'm not 100% sure on the 650 case size.

Been running mine this way and the tach is of course way off but still operates to a usable level. Tach hasnt broken yet.

Believe the 650 tachs are bigger and have a black matte colored face. 

On my cb550 bike which have a 650 cam I originally intended to have a MC GPS provide my Speedo, but that eliminated the ODO which I was going to use a small Bicycle provide an ODO with the GPS. Providing the Speedo function.  Since the Bike GPS I had decided to go tits up for no reason when I build my restomod cb550 with cb650 cam and a mechanical NOS cb650 tach I will have to find something for the Speedo as the front end is getting modern forks but still a modern cartridge std design, not upside down… Yamaha R6/FZ6 front end
So, I will have to probably use a phone that can withstand the heat or find a GzpS enabled Speedo since the standard Speedo gear drive and cable cannot be used with modern forks that have a huge front axle by comparison to the stock cb550 or a cb650 axle...
Crazy thing is I have a dual disc setup that will be put in service that could be used but I think I need modern braking capabilities for city traffic I will have to deal with. Tucson driver's are stupid and cause lots of challenges for MC riders even when you drive like a normal person, not the hooligan maniacs that give us a bad name. Probably will drop cartridge emulators in the Cb550 forks and drive super cautious. I have drilled discs for the cb550.

Do you have a cb650 tach yet?
