Has anyone ever mounted an Round Oil Cooler?
« on: March 08, 2024, 12:46:04 PM »
I'm currently working on assembling the engine for my Turbo 836 Hondamatic. I plan to add an oil cooler for those long traffic days, but the standard oil coolers everyone seems to have mounted just don't fancy my pickle. I think it would be kinda cool (even if less efficient) to mound those round transmission oil coolers to the lower frame rail. Has anyone ever done this before, or have unique oil cooler mounting locations?

Years ago I raced a Lotus 22 single seater Formula Junior. It had a dry sump 1100cc FORD engine in the back and carried all its oil in a tank in the nose, behind the radiator. Hard aluminum lines carried the oil to and from the dry sump pump, up both sides of the car. We used two of those coolers (in parallel) in the return line to the tank. They were very effective and also added capacity to the system. I think the ones we used were from a small aircraft!

I haven't seen one before now.  Interesting.
How about a drawing of it mounted?

I looked at the specs on a Summit version and theirs is only 1/4" NPT ?

Did some digging and found a mfg website that lists single pass ones.

This might be the most reasonable one here.

https://derale.com/images/stories/virtuemart/product/13249-Dimensions-2.jpg

It holds 10 ounces of fluid and has 1/2" NPT connections.

All Derale coolers are rated at 250 psi working pressure, 300 psi burst strength

It won’t cool as effectively as a traditional multi pass radiator, but I like it! Certainly different. Give it a go!

A drag racer I knew had one on his dragster for a transmission cooler, the o rings leaked at the end caps. He wasn't a fan.

Still working on installing the engine into the bike before figuring out where an oil cooler would go. But I mocked up a 40$ cooler I found on amazon. It'll need to be cut down for sure as its 12" long, but I've welded radiator cores before so this shouldn't be too hard. I also may look into anodizing it black, Never been a fan of paint, especially on parts made for exchanging heat, but we'll see.
