If We Had Only Known....
« on: June 05, 2024, 06:05:29 AM »
I have been somewhat shopping for another CB750K project now for several weeks.  Of course some of the asking prices, even for bikes with high mileage, are off the charts.  Since I have sold a few in the past, I really wish all the sellers the best and hope they get every penny they are seeking, but since I don't have that many pennies anymore, I won't be a player.

The crust of this little thread is just to comment how many K's are out there with the hog 16" rear wheel, cut down front fender, and extended fork tubes.  Us "Cool Dudes" back then certainly did a great job of destroying the value of a future collectable.

It's sad to see a great bike chopped up, but it just makes the survivors more valuable.  I only had one experience with a cool bike....  once I found out that it wasn't cool and fun to ride anymore, they weren't so cool in my estimation.

16" wheel, cut fender, long fork tubes are easily fixed, bought several, reasonable price.

+1....it seems everyone always wanted to personalize their bike to make it their own, it will never stop.

Crazy bidding wars on BAT seem to have brought the price up everywhere. Everyone thinks they are sitting on Gold! Mine are gold to me but I'm a keeper. Rarely flip.

Friend of mine told me about a bike shop semi local to us in the past called "chopper world"...he said they had a Honda Dream chopper for sale at one time. The store was long gone at the time of the story telling.

+1…

But you can’t fix the cut and welded ones or the (Gordon frank) frame kits without out the tell-tale sign of non-factory welds..

I never understood the 16" tire thing.
I

At least at the Illinois shops where I worked in those days, the 16" rear was about carrying heavy payloads, for the most part. There were those who also stretched the front end, but the weak swingarm bushings (phenolic) plus the 330 lb. payload of the 4.00x18 rear tire made the bikes pretty wobbly with 2-up and camping gear hung out behind the sissy bar. The 5.00x18 with HD spokes became a "kit" one could buy from places like Rocky Cycle Supply (among others) and we got $50 labor for 'converting' it, which was a LOT of $$ in those days for 2 day's labor. Still, I did 2-4 per month on the 750 bikes during the Spring seasons. The smarter owners had us install the bronze swingarm  bushings (which were CORRECTLY made in those days, $29.95 per set, not cheap!) at the same time, and some had us drop teeth on the rear sprocket (before the 55 MPH thing started) because the OD of the 5.00x16 rear was more than 1" smaller than the 4.00x18 tire. That was what got me using bronze bushings in my own 750 and I was startled to find that the bike felt 50 lbs lighter after installing them. Same with the steering bearings: we often saw them getting changed in the bike's 2nd touring season, with >10k miles on them.

No, that was the '60s and '70s. ;)

But continued into the '80's, Scott.  Look at this '82 Nighthawk with a 16" rear wheel and long forks, both stock directly from Honda.
