cb500 engine and Carbs for $300
« on: June 18, 2008, 10:20:25 AM »
I have been working to get my 71 500 on the road. The Carbs I have are missing the leaf spring that hold the main jet, has a crack in the mounting plate, and general need a good cleaning and new gaskets. I decided to buy another set of carbs and rebuild them and use the ones I have for parts. I have been looking on Ebay and the price for a set of 71-73 500 or 74-76 550 is around $70 to $150. And Then I found a site called ioffer.com with a guy selling a 73 engine and carbs for $300 ($100 for shiping). The engine looks as if the bike was drop, the cover on the coil side is dented  but other than that  looks good. My question is $300 too much for them both?

$400 for both? Probably be better off buying a complete parts bike.

I have thought about a parts bike but I really don't have the room and I think my wife would feak if I bought another non-runing bike home.

Depending on the condition of the carbs that are included with the engine from this guy, you may end up putting the same amount of time into getting them cleaned, jetted, etc...that you would spend just fixing yours...

I am heading back down the the shop in a second...I'm almost certain that I have a spare set of 500/550 carbs that I used for parts, and will see if I have the mounting plate and leaf spring that you need and will send em your way for the cost of shipping. Then you can just buy the gaskets or other bits and get yours running for a fraction of the cost.

If they are in decent shape I think it would be a pretty good deal for $300, esp if you are having problems with your current motor.

Hey Tank,

Sorry man, but I looked all around and couldn't find that extra set of carbs that I thought I had.

If you need just the mounting bracket and leaf spring, I would suggest posting in the parts wanted section. Someone is bound to have these sitting around somewhere that they could give/sell ya.

The parts you want are the same for all 500/550 from 1970-1976 inclusive
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

did you end up getting the motor or just the carbs? i happen to be in the same boat looking for a similar engine. I have a great carb, but i need the block and wouldn't mind a spare trans. want to split the cost and both take the parts we need?
