1979 CB650 carburetor, parts questions/source
« on: March 22, 2007, 05:49:40 PM »
Got a 79 CB650 with a set of carbs that needed rebuilt in the worst way.  I have thouroghly  cleaned them with some chem-dip, washed them and blow dryed all the parts and cleared out all passeges.  From the looks of the float bowl gaskets I had determined that someone had been in them before (got a feeling it was an old retired Honda mechanic that my parents had known forever) as the gasket was sealed down with some sort of gasket sealer.

On the wonderful world of Ebay I purchased a set of 4 carburetor gasket kits, genuine Honda.  I'd feel better putting in new float needles although when I used all the old gaskets on the initial cleaning (just removing the bowls and using carb cleaner on the assembly, chem dipping the bowls and jets) upon reassembly I had no more fuel leak from the float bowl over flow drain so I thought the needles probably sealed up OK.  I'd still like to put in some new float needles though.

With the intial carb cleaning I didn't have much success.  Bike would run with ether, I'd get gas in the carbs and an occasional back fire out the exhaust, or a poof back out the carbs.  So I removed them and competely disassembled them and give every piece a chem dip.  With all of them apart I found they are in need of a full set of air cut-off valves.  I can get some K&L from the local Honda shop for 14.95 each.  I don't want to buy OEM on this as they are simply to high for me.  That place in Canada, Sirius Consolidated Inc, will make me a deal on 4 air cut off valves and 4 float needles (plus a couple of those tiny washers that go on the idle air screw between the spring and o-ring, I lost two of them).  My only concern is I see lots of reference to bad quality parts for carbs from this place.  Would the float needles and Air Cut off valves be OK?

The accelerator pump seems to be in pretty good shape, it'll pump fuel, isn't cracked and seals good.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well I guess unless someone says otherwise, I'll be getting my air cut-off valves and float needles from Harry at Sirius, in Canada.  He gave me a good price on the those pieces plus the washers for the idle screw (I lost 2).

Does anyone have any experience with what to use to replace the felt seals along the choke shaft and the felt and rubber seals along the throttle shaft?  Does a simple O-ring work OK?

Placed my order today for the necessary carb parts from Harry.

In the mean time I set the cam chain tension, adjusted the valves and set the static timing as well as installed a new set of NGK plugs.  Should be all ready for the carbs when I get those parts.

The cut off valves are unnecessary.  Defeat them and adjust the mixture screws to 2 1/2 turns out from closed.
