CB400F Head and Barrels question
« on: April 02, 2025, 09:57:50 AM »
Update to my earlier post about getting my CB400F back on the road after about 30 years. Got the front wheel sorted out and was finally able to get some miles on it and noticed some slight oil leakage at the head gasket. I am not really surprised after setting that long and I assume the little seals went south. Unfortunately now that the gasket is compromised I am going to pull the top end off and check everything. I had the top end rebuilt  a few years before the bike got shut down, but it was done by another guy working in my shop as I was booked up on other stuff. I did observe a lot of the work but now I want to go back and check it.

I started this process by stripping down a second head and barrel set that I had picked up free at about the same time. It was essentially big ball of gunk and grease on a much abused engine. I figured it would reacquaint me with the inside of the bike.

I got down to the clean state you can see in this picture and I have the two alignment tubes and oil restrictors that would need to be removed to do a smooth sealing surface on both. I think I can tap the restrictor out from below but I don't see an easy way to pull the tubes without damaging them. Just wondering if tapping the restrictors out would do any damage  and if there is a trick to pulling those tubes.

Can't help you on the restrictors, no experience.... as for dowels, maybe buy a couple new ones....  have a read.

I find something like a drill bit stem that fits closely inside them, so they don't get crushed, then take them out with a good quality set of vice-grips. They may need a little cleaning up afterwards with a file.

Thanks for the quick responses. After reading this I worked up my courage and tapped on the restrictors. The came right out and were full of junk. Glad I did it. I will use the drill bit method on the alignment tubes.

Thanks again!
