Oh No, Not the "Shiny Orange Paint" thread Again
« on: April 17, 2025, 04:16:51 PM »
I have owned my 1976 CB550F Super Sport since July 2009. I rode it regularly for a couple years and then we moved to a new home in Vail, AZ. I have other bikes. The 550 sat for a long time, then I tried getting it running again. It was a mess, so it sat for another 8 years while I tried to finish up other projects. In January of this year (2025) I pulled it into my new air conditioned garage and commenced to get it back on the road. First up was a carb rebuild. That went well. Then I did some much needed maintenance including a cam chain tension service, valve adjustment, new points and ignition timing, pulled and cleaned and regapped the plugs. Once the engine was running good, I did a carb synch. Now it runs really good. Replaced the front tire. Rebuilt the front master brake cylinder, it had crystals growing in it! Rebuilt the brake caliper.
Now I am ready to freshen up the paint on the tank and side covers. This 550 has the original "Shiny Orange" paint. For years, on this forum and others, I heard that Dupli-color DE-1607 was a great match for this paint. That is plain rubbish! Somebody is color blind. Not even close, there is just too much red in this paint. Can anybody help me out with a source for a good match for this 1976 paint. My last gasp is to take one of the side covers to a paint jobber for a custom mix, but that is usually big bucks. HELP!!!!! It is like a wet dream having this bike back on the road!

Trouble is they are in UK and i think you might have problems getting aerosols, or paint accross the pond
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Are you sure you need paint. It'll probably be worth more (or the same) with its original paint.
