cb77 replacement cable advice
« on: May 02, 2025, 05:07:22 PM »
Needing to replace the cables on my 1966 cb77. I purchased a set on E bay from Thailand, which seems to be the only source I found. The throttle was too long, clutch was too short, and front brake was long but would work. Tach and speedometer length was ok but drive ends would not install in their drives. Now the fiasco of returning them. Have any members had good luck with a supplier? Thanks, Gary

That long/short combo sounds like the wrong model of cables?
Maybe some background will help you ask the vendors the right questions: the CB77 came with 2 different kinds of handlebars (if yours is OEM version). One version was the "flat bars", which were simply the same height as the top of the triple tree where they bolt down. These are also called "short bars" sometimes. Some of them, though, came with the "Western style" bars (most of these seemed to be an option after 1966), which rose almost 2" up over the top triple tree, and are wider than the "flat bars". The throttle/brake cables for these are approximately 6" longer than the earlier versions.

Do you know if yours are OEM style handlebars?

The part about the instrument cable ends not fitting is odd, though? I can't speak to that one, haven't seen troubles with that myself. :(

Hondaman, thank you for the response. As I understand it, on USA export bikes, the flat bars were common until 1965. 66 had a slightly wider and about a 2-3 inch rise. This is what I have. I would be shocked if anything was changed on this bike. Even the light bulbs are original. After messaging with the Ebay suppliers Their responses were not consistent or had no clue what USA bikes came with. Some listings say be sure what you order and ask questions. When you ask for cable lengths they answer they either won't measure or I'm supposed to know what to order. One asked for a picture which I sent, and the response was that I have "custom" bars and their "high or low" bar cables won't fit. One supplier did send me a picture of what his cables fit. It was Elvis's cb77 from the movie "Roustabout" and it has cl77 bars on it. The cables that he sent were the throttle was 18" longer, the front brake was 2" longer, and the clutch was 4" shorter. Go figure.
Is there any source that you know of for gray cables other than Thailand? Thanks, Gary

Popshonda on EBay is another source. Used to be Ohio Cycle years ago. Some prices are good, some extravagant for your vint bike.

How about more photos of your bike? Side view etc. Might help folks see the problems.
