I got CB fever
« on: June 19, 2025, 12:06:12 PM »
Just gifted to me this ‘71 K1 with 10K miles.  Unfortunately it has been stored in unheated storage for several years in the PNW.   First job will be to remediate the rust that is setting in.   I plan to go through it and make a reliable runner.
Looking forward to having my questions answered.

Welcome aboard the forum from southern NH.
It looks like it isn't too badly rusted.
How's the inside of the tank?

Look under the Site Sponsors section and get one of Hondaman's book on restoring the 750. It's a superb book on bringing it back to life. Mark has been working on the 750s since the inception in 1969 and he includes a lot of the tricks of the trade in it. Well worth the expense as it's far better than the Honda shop manual. It goes far more in depth on even rebuilding the carbs and motor.

Thanks all.  Little rust in tank but not bad.  I will try the electrolysis approach or vinegar slosh.   I did get a copy of Mark’s book from a friend.

Welcome from Canada! If there is gasoline “varnish” in the bottom of the tank, use a few pints of MEK to dissolve and then vinegar did a fine job on mine (light rust). Fantastic bike, my K1 is my absolute favourite cb750. Still on the original HM300 pipes? Glorious!

Thanks again all for the warm welcome.   My first Honda overhaul was to my 72 SL125 when I was 15.  Learned a lesson when  I plugged one of the oil galleries to the cam with Felpro gasket goo and froze that thing up tight after about 2 hours😝.  Raced an RM125 in the early 80s and had a loaner K2 to use in the summer of 80.  Loved that bike, gold!

This bike appears very original.  I don’t know much of its history prior to my uncle buying it in 2019.  All I have found missing so far is the grab handle that mounts to the top shock bolt.  It does have the MH300s and baffles.   One pipe has some rust through.   Does anyone R/R these if not too far gone?   Patch weld and rechrome?

Yes, they can be patched;I like doing it to save original exhausts.
A skilled welder can clean and patch that with some SS Mig or Tig,afaik;I had a similar thing done by a skilled welder on factory chrome, and the welder gave 'just enough' heat using a Mig w/ Stainless Steel wire and it has not rusted in 5 years of the bike being parked outside  :)

I don't know of anyone in the states that offers the service, but as said they can be patched.
There was a guy on fb a couple years ago that cut out the bad areas of some CB500 pipes, made patches of stainless steel, welded them in and polished it looked great.

Welcome from the lowcountry of SC!
I just did the Electrolysis on a cb 450 tank this week.

I crafted a bit of a different rod using bent flat stock steel.
I bent it secured between screwed 2x2 resting on a rubbermaid bin.

Welcome Brown747,
Your Honda story is similar to mine: K1 + SL for racing. I was 15 in 1968 and read to pounce on a CB450 when the CB750 showed up.
You are very fortunate to acquire the complete unmolested red K1
