I was outside cleaning up the Rat Race, I heard the whistle and then the roar, I knew it was going to be special but was it a radial engine or a Merlin? Good news, it was both.  There was a P51 Mustang, a Corsair and I think, a T6 flying formation and doing fly-bys at the local airport. They did a couple fly-bys and headed northeast.
Earlier in the day I heard radial engines, assuming it was the local Stearman that frequent Galesburg. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about the Heroes that flew these machines in WW2.
Some people think the whistle is from the gun barrels, this bird can whistle without them. Apparently, they were here for a bit, this was on a friends facebook, he works at the airport from time to time. Semi-retired.
Apologies to anyone that can't see it.

I still miss when Paul Allen had his Flying Heritage Collection housed over in Arlington Wa. All summer long warbirds would fly over my house, it was awesome. 8)

that's a T-28 Trojan, north american's follow up to their T-6.
"whistling" from the Corsair occurred in high speed dives due to wing root air  ducts for cooling components. lol, no guns needed.
I have about 2hrs. in a Stearman, it's a big plane.
18 year old kids flying these warbirds, lucky if they had 200 hrs before engaging the enemy. Think about it..

Nice to see this topic on vintage planes and military aircraft. I live in Oshkosh, WI and Monday starts the annual EAA air show. I have been around here since it started in the early 1970's when Paul Pobereszny relocated the club from southern WI to Oshkosh. I will be out there this next Wednesday to spend the day. Always enjoy watching them fly over the house. Especially the military aircraft in formation. Keep the pics coming and I'll add some later.

It is a mad house on the south side of Oshkosh where the airport is. I'm on the north side, but the formations fly over the lake a lot so I hear them rubble and run out the door to see them. The EAA visitors are so friendly and clean. There is never any trash on the grounds. They are a pleasure to have here.

My brother corrected me on the T28. He was in the Air Force.
We saw a Goodyear blimp near here one day when we were leaving a junkyard, it was cool with clouds and hot sun, I swear it was going further up and down than it was traveling over the ground. It looked like a miserable trip. We chased it on the ground for a while marveling on how much it was diving down and going back up in the thermals.
Sometimes they tie down at the QC airport about 30 miles from there so they may have still been trying to get some altitude.

go pro cameras on the wingtips. I'm in the back seat of the P-40, and the front seat of the T-6.
The acrobatic T-6 ride was a gift. The P-40 ride at the WW II Reading, Pa. show cost me $1800 for 30 min.
T-6 was $800 ?

Galesburg airport is the one my grandfather operated, and where my dad learned to fly -- solo at 16, private license at 17, commercial license at 18... in the early 1950s. I'll tell him there were some old warbirds there and he'll be psyched. I am in Seattle with him now, and we went to the warbird museum in Everett last week -- full of great planes, all in operating condition, but there are a couple they have retired from flying as they are the last known example -- one was a Focke Wolf 190 with a v-12 instead of a radial engine, and where they stretched the cowl and added a section near the tail to balance it out... The other two were Soviet and Japanese planes...

The Galesburg airport has hosted the Stearman fly-in for decades, I've seen over a hundred on the ground at a time.
A couple years ago I got to one of the museums in Chino Ca. and my brother and I went to Wright Patterson in Dayton Ohio where he was stationed for a while a couple years ago. I asked him what was inside hanger 18 and he said his friend was a security guard there and there was nothing in it. What's secret, is under hanger 18. L0L.

The Stearman fly in is going on, I'll try to get a few pics.
There are more fly-ins around the country these days so we likely won't set records for planes on the ground. They always overfly our labor day parade which is the oldest continuous parade in the country. (we didn't stop the parade for WW2 or covid)
