Here goes, it's XR750 build time.......
« on: September 18, 2025, 12:55:05 AM »
As some of you may have seen, I'm going to build a sohc750 as a trail bike, fully legal and registered.
It's taken me 10 years and 3 house moves to get to this stage, and that stage is pulling it apart for paint, electricity, cables , powdercoat and so much more.

It started with a pair of BMW knobby tyres I got off eBay for $10 brand new, then a mate gave me his K7, I noticed the wheels and tyres matched, a dream is born
Down below is a picture of the to do list....
The frame will be Honda red and all the bodywork will be NH138, which is a stock colour on some XR's, blue panel on the front and side number plate areas.
Anyway some pictures
Also I'm hoping to get into both the BOTM and hideous miscreant threads , sorry can't remember the proper name.
i blame Terry

Nice Koni alloy body shocks, using lifters to get the right height but if anyone has a pair of marzocchi 380-400mm , red with remote reservoirs let me know
Stencils arrived for the seat, which is quite red

Spotty, didn't you have a longer than stock swing-arm? That's what you want for the longer wheel travel an off-road bike needs. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Spotty…. Ihave a set of lovely Konis that are too long for my cb750. How long are the ones you have? I’ll measure mine for a “swap”?

Mine are 340mm centre to centre

As you can see in the pic, the Koni logos are pretty much gone from some excessive polishing.

And thanks for the offer, let me know what you think

Engines out, even lieing on its side I still needed Terry to get them apart
On to getting rid of the unnecessary brackets and tabs including the pillion peg mounts.
The engine is, as you would expect, filthy. I've made brackets to attach it to a car engine stand ( the orange bits at the front ) but there's no way I can manipulate it all on my own. Terry will be over Thursday so hopefully we can get it sorted then.
Once it's on the stand I can get it outside for a thorough degrease and pressure wash blasting. Do have to seal all the holes up first.

This will be great entertainment!!
I can't imagine that XR1500 getting more than a few feet off road before sinking but it looks cool.
An XR750 has a better chance of working.

An exercise in frame lightening or getting rid of the brackets etc I don't need, passenger footrest hangers, airbox tab, un-needed steering stop etc.
Needs a couple of bits welded up then the swingarm gets the same and all off for powdercoat

Before you powder coat, what about some tabs for a bash plate?

i did think about that but the bash plate would go where the exhaust is and even though i've got a fair bit of clearance it would look like the bash plate is suspended in mid air under the pipes

Or you could fashion up 4into2 up pipes, like the CB450D Scrambler had.

that was the original plan, to have high level pipes, i was trying to find a turbo header with a side exit ( would have gone for a centre exit too ) but i couldn't find one over here

we tried to make one from a set of 4 into 1 headers but it all went horribly wrong and there are a lot of pieces under the bench from that experiment

if anyone has a turbo header they don't need let me know and see if we can work out a plan

How much of the head-pipes from the headers are left? I made this one using parts cut from an aftermarket Kawasaki 550 header, along the larger tubing recycled from a White Bros XR 500 exhaust. Once you merge each pair of head-pipes together, it gets easier with only one pipe on each side. You can buy mandrel bent u-bends and cut and fit sections together to the shape you want. I suggest buying more than you think you need. ;)
