1977 400 Four Breather Pipe
« on: October 31, 2025, 09:44:29 AM »
Hi Guys, does the engine breather pipe on the top of the engine just dangle out the back like the carb overflow pipes od is it supposed to connect to the bottom of the plastic airbox? Thank you for any help.

As your sitting on the bike, the breather vent hose runs along the lefthand side of the main frame spar. There's a clip on the underside of the frame that'll hold the wiring harness and this vent tube. At this point the frame goes from a single to a double frame rail. The vent hose the goes over the airchamber and down the right side of the tube that connects the air chamber to the airbox. Then the hose makes a hard 90degree turn too the bottom of the airbox where it connects to a plastic bowl shaped fitting that then vents to the bottom of the airbox as well as another tube thats hangs down to vent any oil that may collect to the atmosphere. Just a clean air type of afterthought, it's an awkward and clumsy (at best) design. If I find the time to pull the top half of the bike apart I'll post a pic. Don't hold your breath, but ya never know.

To go along with Mark's explanation to show the bowl shape under the air box.
