First Gold Night
« on: November 10, 2025, 07:44:02 PM »
It is getting down in the lower 20's tonight, it is really the first cold night of the season so far.  Today I cleaned the gutters one final time, rode the leaves in the yard into oblivion with the riding mower, shut the foundation vents, put all of the hoses up and installed the winter guards on the outside spigots.  I still have to rig the heat tape on the sump pump hose and refill all of the propane tanks for the garage heater, but it crossed my mind today, I don't mind winter as bad as I used too.  As I have gotten older the summer heat kicks my butt more and more, the humidity here in Virginia can be downright brutal.  I spent a number of years in a large cinderblock electrical supply warehouse with no heat or a/c and always swore I could take the heat over the cold any day, funny how a comfortable recliner, warm blanket, fat yellow cat, and fire in the fire in the fireplace can change your mind.  I am sure advancing age contributes to the change in attitude also.  You know what, let the cold come and the snow fall, I don't have a darn place to go, and the coffee pot is always ready for action.  Have a great winter all.........

Dang, folks from around here go to Virginia in the winter to warm up. The leaves around here in central Illinois are still shedding, it was a warmer than usual fall, the trees got behind.
We also get the heat and humidity but it isn't considered sub-tropical.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Well I for one am hoping you will get some late Indian Summer heat britman as I still have to return to NH on my goldwing on my late round the country trip to see the grandkids, I'm in Dallas and headed to Florida next before the northward swing......and I'm hoping to bring along some warm days so I can take the 750 for a ride when I get back to warm it up so as to change the oil before it's winter's nap....

It’s already snowed here! Warming up in a few days, but Winter has arrived.

Curious….. What are “winter guards on outside spigots”?

The ones I have are a 'U' shaped big looking cup, that has a layer of Styrofoam on the inside.  It has a rubber hook that fits on the faucet that is routed to the outside so you can pull it up tight against the faucet/siding to create a seal.

Interesting….. I have inside shut offs on ours and drain them back for the winter. I have one inside our attached garage that stays on, but only the handle and the spout are in the garage. The stem is 12” long and reaches into the house basement, to the body of the valve. I usually shut that one off in late December.

Winter has come to Central Texas too, it was 42F this morning. But it will be short lived, back into the 80's tomorrow where it belongs.

We received a dusting of snow last night which disappeared as soon as the sun came out. So I proceeded to rake the front yard one last time, it flurried on me the entire time, I don't think its getting out of the 40's all week. What happened to global warming?
