Email Issues With Outlook Express
« on: April 15, 2007, 08:48:53 PM »

This is about to drive me nuts. >:( I've had issues with this off and on for a bit. Lately, it's getting to be a Pain! Friday, a fellow sent me an email with some pictures of a modified CB77 305 Super Hawk and all I got was a bunch of letters, numbers and symbols. I emailed him back and he broke it down into 3 different emails. That worked great. Then Saturday he sent me another email that he would send me some info and pictures of some parts he had for me to buy, if I wanted them. Well, today he sent those pictures and they were screwed up just like the first time. I responded to tell him what happened and he tried again and broke then down into 3 different emails again and this time, it didn't work. Any suggestion as to how I can clear this up? I've got a cheap HP $150 used PC w/ Windows 2000 and I'm using Outlook Express.

                                                              Later on, Bill :)  ;)

Top left should show "File", "Edit", etc.
Click on "help" and some options come out.
"      "Online Support" and then pick from the options on the left.

Sometimes it helps to call your server, too.  Chip, who has an Indian accent, is usually quite helpful.

Thanks there Uncle. ;)  Might know that something like this would happen when I'm kinda in the middle of dealing with a guy on some parts to fix my CB77 Super Hawk up with. Toward the end of the problem, I started getting blank emails (an envelope, a time and date received and blank in the middle) Last time that happened, I finally restarted my pc and it cleared up. If that doesn't work this time, I'll give your suggestion a shot. I did just get through restarting my pc and the Outlook Express seems to be functioning properly, for now. We'll see what happens when an email arrives. Thanks again for your response. ;)

Hey Uncle, thought I'd let you know that the restart worked and the emails got through with the pictures of the CB77 parts.

I had a lot of trouble with Outlook Express. Wanted to use it because it came free of charge with the OS and the new laptop, but it didn't work smooth. Many times, when I sent attachment files, the recipient would receive up to 30 -you read well, 30- emails with the same subject and text, but no attachment. First I thought it could be the mail server, but when connecting to my account via webmail, everything worked well.

I ended up installing the full Outlook software and had no more problems. This was just six months ago.

Well, both of you-
Woke up thinking about you Bill.  I'm sure a cup of coffee will cure that...  Your files (inbox, deleted itiems) could be packed.  Also, I find I need to get my computer professionally cleaned every once in a blue moon.

  Raul,
I'm using the Outlook Express for the same reason because it's free and I'm pretty used to how it works and all. For quite a while, I had very few problems with it and lately problems pop up. Thanks for your input.

  Rxman,
I'm not completely familiar with cleaning out &/or emptying folders. A while back, a guy at ebay sent me an email telling me that I needed to clean out the ebay stuff and how to do it. I do a cleanup now and then (history, cookies, etc) About every 2 or 3 days, I try to do a cleanup using "Spybot Search & Destroy" and also use "Ad-Aware SE Personal". I've also got "AVG Free" that seems to do some good. Any Tips on how to run the folders and files would be appreciated.

  Uncle,
Morning to you too. I hope you got that cup of coffee and that it worked ;D I'm sure that my pc could use some professional help. I'm thinking I could too! ::) My wife said that a stiff drink might help too! ::) I'd like to get me a newer (still a used) pc and upgrade from Windows 2000. As I said, I'm not very pc oriented. I know just enough to get around and sometimes I don't get around too well.

Thank you all for your input on this and if anyone can send me an email or a PM telling  me how to clean up my files and folders, I'd appreciate it.

                                                     Later on, Bill :) ;)

Try switching to thunderbird. It is the companion program to Firefox. It works very well and most of the time uses less memory to operate than outlook express. It is free and is only about a 5 meg download. It will import everything from outlook express so you dont have to worry about that.

But it is just a suggestion. I went with thunderbird about 2 years ago and have never touched outlook express since.

You know, I'd been considering that very thing. I went to Firefox not too long after it came out and as a matter of fact, I heard about Firefox while watching CNN one morning and decided to check it out. I'm usually a bit slow to change things and this just might be the time to jump ship and go with Thunderbird. Seems like Firefox and Thunderbird are here to stay, doesn't it? Thanks eldar. ;)

Raul & Bill,

Disclaimer: I'm not a computer dewd just a button pusher however....................

It's my understanding that Outlook Express has a limited file size and needs to be cleaned out periodically. I do not know anthing about the full version Outlook.

To do this:
1) open Outlook Express
2) Click on "Inbox" or "Outlook Express" or whatever heading appears in the gray bar (Windows XP) in the upper left hand corner of the screen to open the "Local Folders" dropdown list. Here you will see Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items (which you only thought you deleted), and any others you may have added
3) Click on anyone of these to get started. This will open that particular folder where you will see every email that still resides in the folder. You will be surprised when you get to the "Deleted Items" to see all those emails you only thought you deleted. I still have 4212 items in my deleted folder. Ouch.
4) Here you will want to highlight the items you wish to delete by clicking them then click the large red X at the top to completely delete these
items forever. You can do this individually or delete multiple items at one time by continuously holding either the Ctrl or Shift button while
clicking each item then click red X at the top.
5) If you'd like to have a special folder to store emails in, let's say "Honda 750 Stuff", then right click "Local Folders" on this drop down list. You will see "New Folder". Fill in the name you've chosen, highlight the heading you would like it to fall under by clicking that heading then click OK. After you've read your email and decide to save it, right click it from the email list and click "move to folder", highlight the folder you want it to go to then click OK.

Hopefully this might help with your situation.

i'm going to suggest that you get a gmail account and do away w/ any outlook or outlook express usage.  the way the program stores emails and opens them automatically can and most likely will do more harm than good for your computer.

you can set a gmail account (not the sohc4 beta gmail account, sadly) to be your default mail client so when you click on an email link in a web browser it will take you straight to your compose mail window w/in gmail.  and w/ 2 GIGABYTES of storage you really can't go wrong... so, aside from having to change your email address there is NO reason you should not do this.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS IS A HORRIBLE PROGRAM!

I think just about anything Microsoft sticks their greasy little fingers into is horrible! And the problem is that you just think that's the way it is...until you try something else! In general, Microsoft doesn't seem to think through their programing or take a comprehensive view of it....My 2 bits...

get a yahoo account.

has yahoo changed their software... is it actually a "default email client" or still just the run of the mill free email site?

my gf just sent me something via our two gmail accounts... 19 files at 150-200kb each... and no error message yay

Ms has good programs and bad. Just as any other software company has. I mean norton sucks ass if you get the regular version. If you want anything good from them, you need to pay for the "corporate" version. Same with McAfee. Avast and AVG are free AV programs which work better than either norton or mcafee standard versions. DID I MENTION THEY ARE FREE!  Mac OS9 should never have been made. That OS caused many people no end of headaches. But the OS8 series was good. Mac servers have all kinds of issues while the desktop versions usually work fine.

Just saying that There is no way a company could exist if they constantly created bad software, sorry not even MS could pull that off.
