Gl500 Silverwing Shock upgrade
« on: April 12, 2026, 09:39:31 AM »
Hi everyone , this is my other Bike . 82 Gl500 Silverwing base . I just upgraded the old air suspension with an early 2000's CBR600 shock with reservoir . Easy to do ( couple washers for spacers ) . OMG , it rides like a new bike , firmer , and now I can ride two up . Absolutely love it . I highly recccomend if you have a Gl500/600 .

This is a great mod. I have done two V4 Sabre's and a VF 1000F Interceptor using CBR 1100xx Blackbird shocks. On those bikes I had to make adapters to lengthen the shock. Same great results as dirtyfingernails got.

I had an 82' GL500 in the early 90's and noticed the old OEM air shock was a squeaky pogo-stick,but I didn't know you could swap-in an OEM 'other model' shock:nice.

Have you done anything to the front forks also ?

The front forks are easy to get rid of the old air assist that is 42 yrs old . a 6" spacer of pvc on top , more oil , seal the caps , boom , done . There is a video on Youtube . I am doing that next .

I swapped out the pneumatic fork caps for a set with adjustable preload, much easier to adjust than the stock fork caps.
