Where is the ground wire to the handlebar switches?
« on: April 24, 2007, 03:44:34 PM »
Neither the handlebar nor the switches of my CB350 twin were salvageable, so I bought used parts via eBay and just finished reinstalling them after replacing the wire shroud-that was hard as a rock-

Before bolting everything I just wrote some notes about which wires were for -just in case, as the connection in the headlight shell are pretty straightforward- and checked that everything worked. And that's when I realized something strange. I knew that the starter switchs connects the wire to ground, that is the handlebar itself. But, ¿how does the handlebar gets the ground? I always assumed it was via the clamps, but the handlebars are rubber mounted, so there is no contact. So I thought maybe any of the wires for another switch has a ground connection that is put to the metal case, thence giving ground to the handlebar. Nope. So, does anybody know how the handlebar gets the ground? The only possible explanation that I can think of is via the cable outer of the brake and clutch cable.

I know, I know, it's a CB350 twin, but the handlebars are switches are pretty much the same through the Honda range....  :D

I found out the answer to this one when I put electrical tape on the left side under the light switch unit to snug it up a bit....zzzt...no lights. The ground is from the light switch/horn switch unit to the bars.

There should be a lead from bottom of one of the handlebar mounts through top yoke to either the yoke or wiring inside headlight. Otherwise it earths through the cables as the bars are rubber mounted.

Left switch has only four wires: one for the horn, and three for the blinkers: a common wire, a wire for the left blinker and the remaining one for the right blinker.

I wonder why isolating the left switch will leave you with no lights. Light switch is not ground-related; it switches positive to either the high or low beam. Isolating the ground from the handlebar would stop working the starter and horn button.
