kill switch
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:39:49 AM »
Like many of you, the PO on my bike hacked off much of the wiring and for the most part I have it fixed but I still need to fix the kill switch.  My wiring diagram is too blurry to make out the colors etc.

What wires need to be hooked up to get the switch operational.  I gather it has something to do with the black/white wire, but what does it have to be hooked up to?

Black wire(switched 12v) in, black/white wire out. Both should plug in to coresponding color wires in main harness. Can't get more specific without knowing what type of bike you have.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

You mean Engine Cut-Off Switch, don't you?   ;)

Sorry, just finished my first weekend of Rider Coach training for the MSF. We don't kill anything, we don't hit anything... we're a very non-violent group of people.   ;D

On my 750 K6, the killswitch wiring is like this:  Black/White to Black/White at main harness which then splits and goes to both coils.  Then the black just goes to main harness black.  The rest of the wires (starter button, etc) are as such:  black to main harness black, black/red to main harness black/red which then goes into brown/red before it runs to the fuse panel, then the yellow/red runs directly to the starter solenoid.  FYI the black wires are all connected together within the main harness, and they are all hot (should be,anyway).

Still having trouble with the kill switch wiring.  CB750K4

I have the available wiring diagram but it's so blurry I can't make out the color coding of the wires, so I have to ask.

The PO bypassed the killswitch and cut alot of other wires here and there so I'm in the process of getting everything functional for the Safety check.  What I have now is

From the grip switches

blue with white stripe
white with green stripe
black with red stripe
green with yellow stripe
yellow with red stripe
black with white stripe
black

The black with white stripe is now connected to green with red stripe at the harness and the yellow with red is plugged into yellow with red, so the starter button works.

I just need to know which other wires hook up in order to get that  killswitch working?

If you want the emergency engine cut-off feature you'll have to separate the black/white and the black wires and tie them in on either side of the switch. If you don't (as I did on Sophie...retro switchgear = no engine cut-off) you just have to splice them together.

On the '79 650 wiring diagram

blue with white stripe                 high/low headlight switch, one side
(blue)                                       headlight high or low, not sure which, headlight switch other side
(white)                                     headlight high or low, not sure which, headlight swithch other side
white with green stripe               horn switch, one side
black with red stripe                   headlight cut-out when starter button pushed in
green with yellow stripe              front brake light switch, one side
yellow with red stripe                 starter button, one side
black with white stripe                engine cut-off, one side
black                                        starter button, other side
(green with red stripe)               clutch cut-off switch, one side
