I'd check the other fork to see how it is there. Just be a little more careful next time.

There's a copy of the Honda service manuals somewhere on this site (I forget exactly where), but I don't think it's detailed enough to see the orientation of that part.

The on-line parts catalogues often have very good diagrams. I think it goes tapered end up. It looks like part #8 in the diagram below. It's even listed as an "oil lock" in the accompanying price list (it's also listed as "not available", so try not to loose the one you have).

The Fiche does seem to show it tapered end up...

...stock 1972 CB500 '500 Four' undergoing re-assembly...
...Stock 1972 CL450 'Scrambler' also being re-assembled...

Weird: the URL I posted seems to have decided there was no parts diagram available.

Guess they didn't like me piggybacking their bandwidth, huh?

I am an idiot, BTW. THe URL I used included a query string. The database query obviously timed out after half an hour or so, after which the URL was no longer valid. I should have realized that before posting.

But I'm not that far off: just about the only reason I can think of for anyone to write a result page that relied on the query string that way is hide the location of the graphic. The reason to do that is to stop people piggybacking on your badnwidth by referring directly to the graphic.

It fits over the end of the damper (part 10 in th picture) when it sticks out of the tube and will only go on one way

can anyone else confirm the last statement made here.
i also thought that it would fit into the damper...it makes complete sense.

but the diagram shows the opposite...that the narrower end faces (and butts up to, but does not insert over) the damper.

ran into the same problem when i disassembled my 750 forks...that oil lock piece just fell out and i didn't know which way it faced...d'oh!
