HPC Coatings
« on: June 26, 2005, 11:40:49 AM »
I see these coatings mentioned on some posts.  I am thinking about sending my valve cover into get coated in the polished aluminum.  If you just shined the valve cover to look like a mirror do you run tino trouble with the heat.   How much does the HPC coatings cost, the webside has a form, but no meniton of price.  I have refinsihed my forks and working on the drive cover, which is looking close to a mirror with the help of the bench grinder.  Anyway, any input would be helpful.

I have a HPC coated cam cover on my K2 with no heat issues whatsoever. Polished aluminium.
Cost in NZ $ was about $70 from memory, thats about - ummmm $50US ? at the moment..
Get in touch with them, they will have a price list which they can post to you...

How brillant is the coating relative to polishing it with a buffing system

The HPC coating: not quite such a 'smooth' finish, in the respect that the cover is bead blasted. As these older covers are all a little pitted, this does not remove the slightly pitted texture of the metal. But the finish is bright. Check some of the pics on my site. The finish is also long lasting, it only needs a soft wipe every so often.
Buffing the aluminium removes the very slight pitting but will eventually corrode, and needs either a clearcoat to protect it, or regular re-polishing to keep the finish looking good. It is hard to reach all the cam cover when the motor is installed.

HPC coating reachs all the hard to get to areas eg spark plug recesses.

For me, I like the HPC finish. I may post another pic of another HPC - coated cover for you.

Forgive quality - digicam is old.

1st pic: didn't use flash

2nd pic: flash used. The covers behind are painted with VHT Aluminium, then heat restistant clearcoat. The alternator cover has a welded repair in the usual place :-)  I'm not going to use a good cover for a race bike...

That looks really nice.  When you send it in to HPC do they blast it?  I will probably shine to a finish my side covers and then just polish occasionally.  I am paiinting the motor block with the VHT aluminum.   Thanks for the pictures, ill post the finished product when im done

HPC do the blasting. If you have already polished your cover, the finish may be better - smoother - than in these pics.
The side covers are much easier to clean. VHT is a good paint.

I don't have pictures but I have a not so good  result from HP Coatings.  I had my exhaust (Kerker 4 into 1) for my 76' 750F coated with their polished aluminum heat resistant coating.  They were suppose to clean and smooth out the exhaust before they coated: at least that is what I paid for.  The finish sealed very well and it doesn't "blue" like a polished exhaust would but it is not smooth by any means.  I plan on replacing the exhaust later after everything is running correctly so I didn't complain but the finished product was less than disireable.
