Reassembly Blues
« on: July 01, 2008, 05:01:42 PM »
Hi everyone

1976 CB550K

I am just getting set to reassemble the carbs, which are completely stripped down and where is has been a couple of weeks since I took em apart I am confused on a couple things. There are little black metal spacers? and Spring seats.... The exploded diagrams don't go in detail enough to show me what I want to see, which is where do all of these seats and spacers go? I know at least one spring and seat go into the linker arm between the throttle shaft and valve... is there more in there? any help or detailed pics / diagrams would be helpful

Also, should I lube the gaskets up with anything before I install rebuild kit for the carbs?

Thanks for helping a newbie :)

The parts I am talking about I believe are in the area directly accross from the #8 in the following diagram. I believe the term they use is "spring seat" a dark piece of metal that fits on the end of a spring. But there are other dark metal pieces that are similar. I am not sure where they go. I know at least one goes into each ?? (part that screws directly atop the throttle valve) along with a spring.... but is that all that goes in there?

Any chance you could post a picture of what you have. I'm sure we could figure out what they are. A picture is worth a thousand words.

I will take a pic and post it, after work when I head over to the garage, about 10 hours from now.

ok, had to use my mobile phone for the pics (sorry about resolution quality).

here is a pic of the parts in question

This is the part of the throttle slide I think some of them may go

and / or in this piece that links onto the throttle shaft

a closer look at it

any help here would be great guys n gals, this is my first time really ripping these carbs apart and I basically want to know where these small bits of dark/black metal go?
I know some are "seats" to go atop springs, but there is really tiny one and a medium sized one as well that do not look like a spring seat, could they be a spacer of some form? They are small and cylinderical enough where I would think they fit inside some sort of link arm but I am unsure of how many and which order they go in.
Perhaps in retrospec I should have shot the disassembly in really detailed pics or even video lol

Please help if you can

smallest pin goes into the screw which fastens into the hole at top of the slide (pointed end in cap, and i think the larger pin goes down into the shaft, These hold the ball joint in place. Not sure bout the springs though???? The bar that the ball joint should be spring loaded i think, so i presume the spring /springs may also live in there. Depends how much you stripped 'em down.
Have i confused you yet ???

Silver, no not confused, hey some help is more than welcome  ;D

I know there can not be many of these "Dark Black" metal bits in the carbs of these bikes, any others have some input on where they "the dark bits" go?

Do you have a shop manual? There's some pretty good pictures of those parts. If you don't have a manual, go here:

Look at page 59 and 61....might help. If not,let us know, and we'll try something else.

am at an internet cafe at the moment, can't download the file. I do have the owners and repair manuals already downloaded, The repair manual did not show the details for those small pieces. I will take a look at the file you linked in about 2 hours to see if it contains different info

:o the last pic you posted may very well be the one I was looking for 05c50, thanks a bunch. The other diagram the parts fiche I had did not resolve into that much detail and the service manual shile it came close did not go into enough detail for the small bits. Is there a chance you could link the rest of diagram for the carbs?

Behold my editing skills lol
here is a modified diagram, these are the bits... in question I believe.

now some things I don't seem to understand... the order of which things go on. Please excuse my terminology

- The throttle valve has "ball lock" atop of it
- This ball is inserted into a sleeve with a notch to accept it
- After inserted, on top of it a spring / seat / medium spacer are installed
- The Ball of the rocker arm is then inserted
- a small spacer, washer then bolt are used to secure the rocker arm

*these are all in the A and B labeled sections of my diagram*

** follow me so far? ***

- The rocker arm is secured to the throttle shaft
- The ball of the throttle shaft is inserted into the linker arm
- Ontop of which a spring / seat / ???? (what is this piece) / Washer / bracket / washer / nut is installed

* these are in the C & D labeled sections of the diagram

..... So, what is the mystery piece?
..... What have a small spacer ontop of a medium spacer in the first part?

Thanks for any help

ok had some time today to do some stuff.
Picked up a new battery (add your own acid type), 1A trickle charger (sale for $10), Oil Rotella 15W 40, Oil filter (fram), couldn't find an air filter (suggestions?).

The diagrams helped out a bunch, that along with some heavy staring at the pieces in my hands I was able to reassemble 3 of the 4 carb bodies before I ran out of time. People were NOT kidding about the new circular gaskets in the rebuild kits being a #$$@# to insert into the fuel bowls... I ended up using some bearing grease to goo em up a bit in order to get em to stay still long enough for me to stick em on.
The next challenge after the fourth carb body will be sticking them all back on the rack and onto the bike with BRAND NEW RUBBERS :)

I REALLY want the bike to start this weekend, its my goal, even if its not running the best... just running. I have time tomarrow so I should be able to get it done.

I always use a tiny bit of automotive spray adhesive (high temp Wurth brand) in the bowl groove to help secure the o-ring/gasket - works perfect every time + guaranteed no slipping/kinking of the o-ring.
