Polishing wheel hubs. Is there a clear coat on there?
« on: June 06, 2009, 04:08:06 PM »
Just about to polish the front and rear wheel hubs for my rebuild and noticed what looks like a clear coat on them.  Where the spokes put dents into the edge of the hubs, it looks like a clear coat has been chipped.  Its not noticeable on the rest of the hubs but only where it looks to be chipped off around these dents.  Doesn't look to be applied by any owner but by the factory if it exists.  Is there actually a clear coat on there that need to come off first, or should I just start polishing.  Whats the technique?

aircraft paint remover, extra fine brass wire brush or stiff parts brush, rat tail file out the rough part of the ridges, gather up a bunch of elbow grease, 220, 400, 600, 1200, 1500, polishing wheel.

should be a mirror finish when you're done.

you can skip the 1200 if you want ;) ;D

Great thanks.  So there is a clear coat on there.  Home Depot (only thing open after 8pm) was out of polishing compound for the buffing wheel.  Guess I'll spend tomorrow sanding.  Do I really need to start with 220?  Hubs are in nice shape and should be pretty smooth after stripping.

I am not a fan of 220 but other folks are.  I prefer to start with 320.  The initial scratches are easier to get out starting with 320 versus 200, per what I have dealt with.

The hubs are biotch.  As least it was for me.
