stripped out drain plug
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:16:28 PM »
 Someone cranked down all the oil drain plugs so tight on my 1978 honda 750 k I stripped out the oil pan drain plug when removing it to change the oil,I am thinking I am better off changing the oil pan rather than trying a helicoil,any comments or suggestions,I am depressed cause the weather is sweet for riding and im grounded.Any one have a 78 oil pan for sale?And does anyone know if any other years are compatible.Also does anyone know if the enginge number on this bike is supposed to match the bikes serial number???Thanks for any help. located in upstate ny

Regardless of how you fix it I'd remove the pan. There are over sized self tapping plugs but I never had faith in them. If you need a pan I've got one. $14.95 + S & H!  :P

No the numbers don't match.

Other years should be compatible.

That said, I've got a '78 pan, also.  $14.99, plus S&H...

Hey there 78 all years 69 thru 78 will fit but man if you really want to ride put some teflon tape to the plug just put it on so  NONE will go inside engine but will fill in the threads enough to hold it in place . and go ride your bike while waiting for your other pan  I got one $14.98 + S H good luck Craig in Maine .
seven fifty four ever its not the destination its the journey Ive been collecting these old dinasours for 33 years . they are quite an ICON

I've got one for $50, but shipping is INCLUDED!  :D :D :D

As cheap as they are, just replace the pan.  If one of these guys send you a pan, you should get it in 3 days via Fed Ex Ground.  $19-$23 to fix a problem is rather cheap.  Be glad you ride what you do.

BTW, welcome to the forum.  :)

Yes, there is an oil pan gasket. They're fairly cheap either on ebay or local bike shops.

Hello 78,

     Welcome aboard.......... kick back and enjoy the ride........ lotsa good scoots here........

     One word of caution.......... as I recall, the bolts on the oil pan are different lengths............ many of the manuals do not mention this and......... you do have to get them back in the right spot........

     Keep track of the bolt's location as you remove them so that you will be able to refit them to their "home" location........

     Good luck........ ;) ;)

You cant go wrong for $14.95...but a fix, if you have access to the tap, is to go to a sae pipe plug. If you have to buy the drill and tap, go with the replacement pan tho

The oil pan prices you see are excellent... But wait... It's a stupid drain plug.
I would be at the hardware store looking for a tap to retap and use a standard non metric plug.

Replacement pan, plug, & gasket went out this morning. I was going to send it out yesterday but by the time I got done cleaning it in the parts washer the post office was closed.

You won't find any Brimmers here!  :o :P

I'll probably get chastised for this but I like sticking them on with Yamabond.  :o
It's like 3-bond only an opaque grey color. I get it at my local Yamaha dealer.
I do both sides of the gasket cuz I simply hate oil pan leaks!  >:(

Got an update email this AM. James is up and running and the pan drain plug and gasket are both as dry as a popcorn fart!  8)

Fill the hole with something like Lumiweld. Then redrill and retap the thread.
I have done it before the repair is better than the original and you can indefinately repeat the procedure if you strip it again.

Ultra grey permatex! It's the only stuff I actually like to work with. I say go with the permashmootz!
My set up:
1977 CB750K
main=120
clip in middle position of five on slide needle
primary=35 (stock)
1/2-3/4 out on idle jet (not air bleed) screw (total form seated)
crappy cheep emgo pods (not by choice, air box     was lost to fire by previous owner)
4into2 exhaust (mac?) kinda loud'ish free(er) flowing
and running on E10 pump gas (premium!)
