My 400f build begins...
« on: June 26, 2007, 03:43:12 PM »
I have officially begun my 400F project and am looking for some opinions/advice on what to look for while I have the engine out of frame. I would like to go ahead and do any preventitive maintenance that I can. I do not really have the budget for hot rodding the engine like I would like to at the moment  :'( So I wil have to keep it fairly basic. (Unless I win the lottery)

Here are some beginning pictures.

Thanks for all the advice and ideas in advance.

Not very impressed so far! I've only seen one beer in all that progress.
Care to explain?

Cheers

Jimmy,

Ha... Unfortunately me and Paulages had already drank the rest of that 12 pack before that picture was taken ... It was the last beer. :-\ That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

well you got the best bike of all the CB's !!!! to start with, check out
the yahoo group dedicated to these great bikes

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/cb400f/

things to check

chances are very good the kickstand is gone or weakend due to rust  that always gathers in the fram at that part. i have rarely seen a 400/f with its factory kickstand still attached, if the engine is out of the frame its east to weld back up.

get a the honda manual, check the cam chain

just a couple of thoughts

Ya that Paulage fella. That explains things a bit.
I've been following his project too.
With the two of you at it, things could get a bid interesting.
Keep up the good work, and hide your mallets.
Now go out and buy some more creative elixir.

Cheers

Another broken side stand here.  Check that closely.  Look for any questionable rust around the frame gussets.

Also, be careful welding without the engine mounted.  The frame may move around if things get too hot.

Well... I examined the side stand and it appeared to be ok. I might get Paul to go ahead and weld a reinforcement weld in there before it is all said and done.

Tonights pics...

Cleaning the frame and trying to get rid of all that nasty rust... This is the before pic.

More rust.

Tonight's chemical helpers

In the paint booth getting ready for sealer

We all love a good action shot... Yep... that's me in the ninja mask shooting sealer. Paulages took this one. He wanted an excuse to huff some paint I think. ;D

I ran out of time tonight... will hopefully finish sanding and shooting the frame tomorrow night.

could have been why the PO completely cut the side stand off of mine, and left a hole in the frame that I need to get welded up

So... I have had some time to work on the 400four since I finally got my 350T and a 750 I had out of the garage.

Making a little bit of progress...

I have disassembled the engine and intend to have some head work done on it, as well as sending my cam off for a grind. Can't decide on a big bore kit or not... that really ups the price a LOT.
there was a thread here about some of my engine woes, sure there will be more to come. :-\

Powdercoated my swing arm and bits yesterday, using a "chrome" powder. Looks pretty damned good. IMO

Here is the before... old powder removed etc. Oh yeah.... ground of the passenger pegs too. ;)

another before shot

Here is the after

another close up... not too bad IMO

Well, that's about it for now.

Gonna start on shaping a seat today hopefully.
