Well, after changing the fork oil yesterday and being embarrassed by complaining about out temps when others have to suffer through worse, I went back out to the garage to tackle the rattling caliper problem.
I had no luck finding shim washers, but our local
true hardware store had shim stock. I bought a few inches in varying thicknesses.
When I pulled the caliper assembly apart I found there was enough wear such that the lower o-ring on the pivot arm had worked out of the recess a bit allowing the pivot arm to vibrate against the pivot pin. I had some gasket punches, but one was too small and the other too big. I sandwiched the shim stock between two 1x's with C-clamps and drilled a couple of 3/8" holes. Removed the shim stock and then used scissors to trim the outer circumference.
Put everything back together, no rattle or clacking. Took it for a ride today and even over the most
challenging pavement and railroad tracks, not a sound. Seemed like I was riding a new bike. Oh, OK, a newer bike.
