I've heard that the 'tapered' pods will not fit on the outside carbs due to the length of the pod being too long and hitting the frame.

I've also heard that the 'straight' type will fit.

I think the OEM carbs are 39mm.

Has any one found these at a reasonable price? The K&Ns are good but expensive.

TIA
Phil

Well, The cheap e-bay tapered pods won't fit unless you trim the rubber boot that attaches to the carb.
I have the same bike, and went through hell trying to make it work - jets of MANY different sizes, needle position, etc.
I wound up taking the darn things off and running the stock setup, and I'm much happier now.
Search for the thread "pods vs standard air box", and you can read all about it.
One poster (edbikerii) was successful in getting pods to work, and he documented his set up.

Good luck to you!

UNI-s are great, look good too, AND they compress real nice to fit on 1&4 AND they are cheaper...

My Emgo pods fit perfectly on my '77 CB550K.  See this message for where I got them, etc:

When you discover that you need to rejet, save yourself a lot of headaches and go straight to this:

I have a set of K&N (tapered) pods I bought for my 750 K6 years ago.  They were on the bike for about 20 miles (at most).  I've heard that they may be a different size.... If you think they're an option, let me know and I'll measure them and take pics for you.

Rick does make a good point in a previous post.  There's a reason I went back to an airbox and standard filter (like Rick did).  My vote: reconsider stock airbox.

This is what the pods look like on my '77 CB550K:

When you take your time and rejet properly you can get excellent results.

I must have had crainial rectumitus when I did the 'search' before I posted this topic....  I couldn't find anything about pods for the 550...

Wow 'two timer' (oops, 'two tired') sure is a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks for the input and photos!

After reading about 4 pages I ordered a stock setup. (I've already got enough problems to deal with.)

Thanks again!
Phil
