New member, 1st bike and 1st rebuild! CB400F
« on: August 01, 2007, 08:38:42 AM »
Hello all, I just bought myself a 1977 CB400F. It had been sitting around in someones barn for the last 30 years and looks like it used to be a makeshift dirt bike for someone. Anyway, this is my first motorcycle and my first rebuild. I always wanted a CB and now I can't wait to have a running CB! I'm sure I'm going to have questions and this looks like the place to find the answers. I'm going to try and get some pictures up so everyone can see what I'm starting with.

Welcome! And I am sure that with time and proper questions, your CB400 will be running better than before! Maybe when you are done we will have another bike entered in the Bike of the Month contest???

Congratulations.  It's a great feeling to get one back on the road.

But now you need another one so you can fix one up and ride the other.

Welcome from So. Calif.  I have the earlier small SOHC-4, a '72 350, and like LL just said, the sound of one of these screeming thru the 4-to-1's is sweet.  But only 9k?  LL I take mine to 11k quit often.  One of these days I will post a video on youtube.

11K...... Really, come on ::)

How many head gaskets have you gone through?? :D :D ;)

Well, for now, it's just 9k once in a blue moon, as I really hate opening these guys up to do head jobs, as the gaskets are getting more expensive for OEM by the day.
I should write to Honda. LOL

There should be in the FAQ area, what aftermarket brand of gaskets and gasket kits are the best.

PM me when you get that youtube video :)

The "Post some Pics" still stands!

LL

    P.S. I'm already leaking a head gasket with the pants to prove it :D ;D ;D ;D

Really! I have never blown or even weeped oil from the head gasket.  It does weep from the cylinder base gasket, but don't they all?

Hey Zeus,
Just got a 75' 550F myself last month after 25 years of no bike. Was going to ride it this summer b4 restoration but the engine crapped out (only enough to make me limp home instead of push thank god) so restoration begins early. I'm going to watch your progress. Hopefully by next summer we'll both have respectable rides. BTW my 550 actually drew a crowd at the O'Reily's parts store yesterday (before crap out event). I couldn't believe it.
Later,
Mark

Well I have finally got the bike down to the bare frame. I'm hoping to have it off to get powdercoated in the next few days. Here are some pics of the tear down.
