Tire Question...
« on: September 13, 2007, 03:10:49 PM »
I am a HUGE fan of the Dunlop TT100s for the 750s.  Oversized and they don't last long, but damn, they stick like glue.  At least the ones I got.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone tried out and has an opinion on the Avon Speedmaster Rib front and Mark II Safety Mileage rear?  They're a "old-school" design and one of VERY few tires that are made in OEM sizes that are not cheap Chinese dog-turd-rubber *cough* Cheng-Shin *cough*.

Anyway, I heard someone say that the "safety Mileage" rear was called the "block of death" or somesuch because it's a rather squared-off design.  However, I've heard folks (mostly) praise the rib front tires, and they've even been recommended by some to combat the "post-K1 Headshake", which I've never seen, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist*.

Anyway, any experience with these tires?  The TT110s are a WEE bit oversized for the front in my F1 and the shoulder blocks rub the wire loop for the steel brake line a little bit.  I've bent it out of the way, but if I wanted to go back to the OEM-sized 3.25x19 and 4.00x18 rear and in original-style tread as the Bridgestone Gold Seal tires that came on it (and are still in the garage), these appear like one of very few options.

Opinions?

*: The TT100s don't give the Headshake to my F1, I only presume because of the longer rake and trail.

I have the Speedmaster Rib and MK II on my 550 and I'm very happy with them.  I was a little worried at first about the seemingly square profile of the MK II, but I don't notice anything different when riding on it.  I bought them mainly for the classic look, but they've turned out to be good-performing tires as well, even in the rain.

I've got a hugely oversized rear tire on my 400F that was on there when I bought it.  (130, which is over 5 inches and stock was 3.50).

Anyway, the sidewall is rather pinched, making the tread kinda block-ish but I've seen no ill-handling from it.

I am gonna replace it with a proper-sized tire when the time comes though.

Thanks for the input!

Any others?
