I get to ride the dragon next weekend!
« on: August 25, 2007, 08:10:06 AM »
I'm excited.  I've got the chance to work with my Uncle next week up in Knoxville, and his friend is gonna ride up there with me on his GSXR 1000.  Unfortunately the Honda is history, so I'll be riding the Yammy triple.  But it should be loads of fun anyway  ;D

Someday I'll get a K bike and *really* cafe it out.  Then the dragon will be much more fun  ;)

Take it easy on your first pass.  The National Park is 30mph...

Could be an interesting story ~

If you have the oppertunity to ride it during the week rather than the weekend, that would be better - less law enforcement and less 'go fast' traffic.

Be careful and enjoy!

From what I understand about the Dragon, I won't be much exceeding 30mph at any point anyway.

I rode up to Fall Creek Falls State Park a few weekends ago and it had some wicked winding points (switchbacks and tight S-curves) that I'm sure are similar to the Dragon.  I didn't get much over 30mph there, either  ;D

Can anyone identify the band in the soundtrack?

I hear they're really cracking down on bikes up there lately.  Read up on the website and even if you don't speed, make sure your lights, horn and paperwork are working and up to date.

It's worth riding, but there are tons of less "famous" roads in the area that are just as fun but don't garner the law's attention as much.  It's been a while since I've had the pleasure of riding in TN or NC, but one of the locals may be able to give you some routes.

I don't see "Black Betty" listed on Rage albums.  Could it be a band called Spiderbait?

This just in for you Deal's Gap visitors,

As you have noticed, the THP has started an enforcement program in the Deals Gaps Area of Hwy. 129.  Some people are very upset with this effort and some people applaud it as long overdue.  We are receiving emails on both sides of the issue.  I can tell you in the past year, we received calls and emails every few days that ask us to do "something" in this area.  The overwhelming majority of people describe this area as "total chaos and lawlessness."  When you combine these types of descriptions and the statistical information on crashes and fatalities (three fatalities in one weekend two weeks ago), we felt like we had to do something as a public safety organization.  You may not agree with our program but it is aimed at protecting the public who frequent that area and ride in a safe manner.  It has nothing to do with "quotas" and driving tourism from Tennessee.
Anyone who rides in that area and does so safely is always welcome and will not have any problem with the THP.  We will continue to conduct our enforcement program for the near future in an effort to make Deals Gap a safe place for recreational motorcycle activity.

I have fired another shot at the Lt. Colonel. Let's see if he replies to it.  :o

No, it's Spiderbait.  I found a sample of the Spiderbait version of Black Betty on Amazon.  It's a bit more raucous than Ram Jam (if you can believe that) with a blues guitar in the "quieter" interludes.

Well I came back in one piece, no harm done.  I must say the Dragon is indeed a wonderful ride, but not worth the hassle.  I went up with a friend on an SV1000 on Friday around 5pm, and on the way up saw 4 law enforcement vehicles (one in a speed trap, one with a bike pulled over and two moving at high speed in the opposite direction).  We got stuck behind a minivan all the way up to the Inn, so the ride up was more frustrating than enjoyable.

On the way back though, I took the lead and scraped through the corners at 30mph.  I finally managed to wear all the nubbies off the edges of my tires ;)

Even though the speed limit is 30, you can still really enjoy the corners... just don't go blasting out of them.  Honestly I was lucky on the way back down...  I didn't see a single cop, and if there had been I would have been nabbed (I stayed in my lane the entire time, but my speed ranged between 30 and 35mph).  And while I saw some pretty fast bikes up there, there was nothing that really scared me.  Everyone stayed in their lanes and even communicated with each other, alerting oncoming traffic to police stationed behind them.

So overall, a good experience just to say I've done it, but I won't wanna go back.  There's a very similar road going up to Fall Creek Falls State Park that's only an hours' ride away, and it more than likely won't have 4 cops (or more) watching it.

Thanks for the report Dan. Now anyone in my neighborhood that wants a good road to ride
give me a shout. I have some as nice as the Dragon, no cops, and very little traffic.

I don't see how tractor trailers are allowed to drive there when its obvious that they CANNOT POSSIBLT TAKE ANY of thos turns without crossing the double yellow, if i did it in my car I'd be arrested for wreckless driving, with all these vids of 18 whelers on the dragon I'd think they'd be banned

Anyone want to start a pettition?
