Topic: Dyna 2000 rev limiter?

  I have a mini speedo and tach fitted and the tach has been pretty accurate up to 6000rpm so far. I went on a "tear-ass" ride yesterday and had the needle hit 10,000rpm on a few occasions. My rev limiter is set at 9000rpm so either my tach or my limiter is not functioning properly.

   I don't recall reading anything in the Dyna 2000 set-up regarding having to do anything special to get the rev limiter working, just set it at desired setting. I do not have the digital tach wires hooked to anything and don't suspect I need to in order to have the limiter work.

   I suspect that my tach cable may need some generous lubing and/or my mini tach is not suited for high rpm reads. Just wanted to post here in case anyone has any insight. Don't want to blow the motor trying to test the limiter

sean,set the limiter at its lowest limit and see if it works there.

 8500rpm is the lowest setting. I'll set it there and see if I can trip it on the way home

Sean, I bought NOS speedo and tack for mine and the Dyna works perfectly. Before installing the Carillos I had it set to 8,500 (min) and it did the perfect stutter. I've since had it set to 10,500 and again - it's dead on with the tach. The engine doesn't die - it just stutters and will not gain rpm. The bike will go flat and quit pulling. In order to keep fuel building up in the ports, they fire each pair alternately - much like my car's MSD A6 "soft-rev" system. The Dyna is the cake. Even when I've hit a false netural, the tach will keep up. I've seen the tach quickly swing up and hit at the set rpm at the same instant the rev control kicks-in. Your suspecting the tach is likely a good start.

  Thanks for the detailed response, Gordon. Good to know what to expect when I hit the limit    I'll give it a go in second gear on the way home tonight and post the results here. when my tach showed 10,000 I was looking down at it 'cause my ear told me I was at, or around stock F2 redline.I'm fairly certain that I can tell by ear if I'm revving way past 8500rpm so I'll spin it up and see if I can get it to go "flat"

  That you did   They work OK for sensible riding (read just over 5000rpm at 80mph in 5th) and look pretty neat, but as a redline indicator they are worthless. Unless you are really, really good at doing conversion calculations at 70mph in 2nd gear while picking out your line through the next turn

Listen to what Terry is telling you Sean........pack those gauges very,very well with plenty of good packing material cause he can smash em' up better when they are in good shape to start with!!!!!!!..................(You guys are killin' me!!!!!!!!)

I've got a nice set of K4 gauges that I took apart and applied the white ground/black letters on for my 836. I later decided not to use them and went for NOS and their stock appearance (the more I did on the inside of the motor, the more I wanted the outside to look stock).

You are welcome to these for what I have in them which is about $100.

  Thanks very much indeed for the offer,Gordon The front end has been changed a bit on my bike and I no longer have room for stock gauges and bracket due to the headlight shell being closer to the triple trees(speedo/tach cable would have to bend a lot to get around it).
When I take the bike in for Dyno next month I'll see what actual rpm I'm at when the mini tach is reading its max 12,000 and see if it's worth keeping. My plan has always been to use these cheap gauges until I could find a digi tach and mechanical speedo that look good together

    Hitting the limitier was just like you said, Gordon. Pretty neat, in fact. The tach needle shot up and then stopped solid as if a pin were stuck through it. The bike didn't stumble or make any explosive exhaust sounds, it just held at that rpm until I let off the throttle

    No worries, mate. I should have some size 13, extra wide "#$%*kickers" left over from my line dancing days that oughta go nice with those chaps. Speaking of chaps, I was going to send ya some for Christmas but it sounds like I'll be sending the colored bandana collection instead. The collection does not come with a manual so you'll have to figure which pocket, left or right, to stick'em in through trial and error.

    We'll also have to get you a bad-ass nickname to go with the new look. My vote is for "Three Dollar Bill", as in "Queer as a........................."

   Aint that the truth   Now that the limiter is tested I've set it back up to 9500. The few times I've asked Mike about what redline I can expect from my components he'll say "9700" without batting an eye. When talk goes beyond that it's straight to the stock F2 rod bolts as being the weakest link. The balanced/lightened crankshaft and CR carbs have the motor running so smooth at high rpm's that I'm willing to cheat up a few hundred to 10,000. When it goes to Dyno I'll set the limiter to 10,500 and ask them to run it to a solid 10,000

    When I had my other bike dyno'ed I ran it to 10,000. Same stock F2 rods, but not near the amount of motor work that the new bike has. When it got above 9000 the Kerker w/ med. competiton baffle was spitting out a sweet, four cylinder symphony. Can't wait to hear that tune again

   Glad to hear that, Rxman   With me on the bike at 90mph I tend to err on the side of caution. Standing next to the dyno, sippin' coffee and shootin' the #$%* is when I become fearless

    APE put a 14,000rpm stamp of approval on the crank. Mike is hesitant to give me the "green light" on the head he built for me, litigation being what it is these days(haha), but I'm sure it's good to 11,000. If I am satisfied with the tune on the CR's when we get it hooked up then I may just spin 10,500 and see if anything blows. Or not, we'll see

   You bet, Mike   I haven't stared at the sheet in a while, but I think my other bike stopped making any noticable power gains after 8,000rpm(stock F2 carbs, drilled airbox, stock valves w/ mild porting). If the new bike makes any power gains beyond 9,000 I will be pretty happy indeed

   My curiosity about revs above 9,000 is all about the failure limit of the motor. Taking it up high on the dyno, and having it survive, helps ease my mind a bit when I'm out on the road spinning the motor up through the turns.

 I hope to get the same operator who ran my last bike. He stopped the run right at 10,000 without a limiter(dyna S) and was very careful and consciensious throughout the testing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about occasional 10K+ runs on your engine Sean, it's not like you'll be holding those RPMs for any length of time. I happily took my K1 engine (stock but newly rebuilt, with RC studs) way past 10K in second and third gears with no issues, and it's not like there are many roads where you can do that anyway.

My poor long suffering Suzuki GS1000S with the leaky pingel loves high RPM and regardless of whether it's making more power over 10K RPM's, it's obviously still going faster as the revs rise, and I often see 90 Mph in second gear at 11000 RPM, but of course, I don't hold it there all day.
