HAS ANYONE MADE A TEMPORARY GAS SOURCE?
« on: September 28, 2007, 12:16:58 pm »
I am attempting to revive an old neglected 78 Cb 750F that has a gunked up tank. I want to make a temp gas source to see if the bike will start and adjust carbs.  Any ideas?

Yep, a square plastic tank from a lawn mower or roto tiller suspended from the handlebars is just the ticket... cheap too

I used an old motocrosser oil tank with a fuel tap epoxied on and hung it from an IV stand I found in the trash (I live next to a hospital). Works great espically since the IV stand is on wheels.

You have to elevate the tank to let the gravity feed work it's magic in feeding the carbs. An old coat rack like you find in the trash or in thrift stores for $5 is good for this. In truth you only need a couple of pints of gas to test any carb bank, so a 3 qt tank like those used on 2 stroke bikes for the oil works well. If you can't find a fuel tap to screw into the tank, you can use a length of hose and a shutoff valve like the ones they use for natural gas.

In the spirit of DIY, here is the manometer I constructed with a temp gas tank attached (see attached picture).  It was more expensive to construct that I had expected.

4 gauges (Canadian tire - $30/each)
2x4 x 6' (old stock)
Square metal base (found in ravine behind my house)
100 lb Castor wheels w/brakes x 4 (Home Depot - $5 each)
1/2 x 20" Copper pipe (old stock)
Rubber caps  x 2 (Canadian Tire - $2)
Air hoses and air valves (aquarium store - $4 + $1 each)
Brass fuel couplers -splitter, 2 barbs, valve (Canadian tire - $30)
Fuel line  2 1/2' (Canadian Tire ($10)
Washers and bolts (old stock)
Tank - cookie tin, seams filled with solder (old stock)
Paint - Black and Silver (Canadian Tire - $7)

It was a toss up between using the old cookie tin and an old turpentine can.  Can didn't need sealing, but cookie tin had wider opening for filling with gasoline.

A transmission funnel with a plastic hose barb fitting in the end, and a Y to go to each hose on the carbs.  The funnel even has a little hole to tie it to a mirror or hang it from the ceiling.

I use a funnel.... I mount a funnel ( plastic) on the handlebars. The funnel feeds the gas hose to the carbs. I add gas as needed.  Low cost and effective.

Sure, I just eat cereal with a lot of fiber in the morning (Kashi Go Lean or Fiber One with raisins), and in the evening I eat beans.  Plenty 'o gas to start my 750 (and peel paint).

Seriously, I bought an auxilary tank from Z1 Enterprises and a T-line from Home Depot (I've got a dual outlet petcock for my '70 750).  Cleveland's offered to let me borrow his synchronizer (when I finally am ready to synch the carbs).

Prost!

I just sit the tank from the bike on a stepladder standing beside the bike. Of course I add longer hoses. I also hang my Emgo gauge set on the ladder as well.

I used to do it that way feliz, but using a garden table rather than a stepladder, until one day I accidentally stepped back into the table and sent my shiny new paint job crashing to the ground :(

Same here, but I think mine was on an old barstool, and it was an old, cracked paint job, so I got off fairly easy.  Some lessons can only be learned the hard way. :'( :'(

I use a wheely bin and longer fuel lines, but I do tie the tank to the wheely bin.

Nearly free.  2 liter Coke bottle. Drill progressively larger hole in center of cap until clear fuel line will just push through.  Trust me, I have never had a leak.  Put gas in the bottle, screw on the cap hang upside down from stepladder nearby.  I usually cut 2 small slits for a long zip tie to suspend the bottle - this also acts as air vent.

Oooops, maybe I'll rethink my method, I'd hate to do that to my nice original 37 year old paint.

Hey Angel,

WHERE did you find a glass IV bottle?  Antique store, or empty nitro bottle?

+2

I am trying to find that very hardware, since that sounds like an ideal set-up.

I have a IV stand, but no bags or bottles.  Will probably rig up a small plastic container with some fuel line leading to a tip.
