Rant - Lady riders not welcome
« on: October 12, 2007, 12:57:00 PM »
Saturday, September 29, 2007, I was toodling along the River Road in Baton Rouge, LA with no particular destination.  Just simply enjoying the beautiful day and having a nice ride on the backroads, just on the outskirts of LSU.  I was headed from Baton Rouge to Prairieville or Gonzales or whereever the day might bring me.

On the left shoulder of the road, I pass an assortment of 20 to 30 Hondas and Harleys and other miscellaneous bikes, and their owners taking a little bike breather.  Ahem, this assortment of bikes is fairly uncommon around these parts because most parts of Louisiana are prodominately "Harley towns."  Either you're in, or you're out.  Usually you don't see a mixture of bikes.  I came to the quick assumption that these folks must be pretty friendly bikers to allow all the different brands and styles of bikes, so maybe I'll just tag along.  I made a u-turn and headed back to the heard of bikes.

I pulled over on the shoulder and asked the first person I saw what their destination was, and if they minded if I tagged along.  Rider #1 says, "I'm riding with my pastor."

"Hmmm....", I think to myself, "wonder why this man can't tell me where they're going or if I can ride."  I wait for a minute, and ask again where they are headed.  Again, "I'm riding with my pastor."

I begin to wonder just who this pastor is that no one can answer my freaking question.  To my surprise, Pastor Leroy Thompson emerges from the heard.  I recognize him immediately because he is somewhat of a local celebrity.  He writes books and all, so that makes him somewhat famous, I guess.  So, for a split second, I am somewhat excited to be possibly riding with Pastor Leroy Thompson, whose books I have purchased in the past.

I initiate conversation again, curious if I can tag along, and what their destination is.  "Hi, Pastor Thompson, I'm just wondering if you mind if I tag along and where ya'll are going."

He responded, "What's you're name?"

I said, "Hope"

He asked, "Do you attend church?"

I said, "yes, I go to Walker Baptist Church"

He asked, "Are you a Christian?"

I answered "Yes"

He asked, "Have you ever been to my church?"

I answered, "Yes, when Kenneth and Gloria Copeland were there."

He stated, "That's been many years.  How long have you been riding?"

I said, "Ever since I could walk good."

After a long pause, he said, "This here is a men's fellowship.  The ladies are having fellowship back at the church.  You can go to the church and have fellowship with the ladies.  Sorry, we're not inviting you to ride today"

I thought to myself, "fellowship with the ladies?!?!? do the ladies have their bikes at the church? The chances are not likely.  The 'ladies' are probably knitting an afghan or sewing a quilt or something."  Instead of saying anything sarcastic or rude, I said "Yes, sir.  I understand."

I cranked Cassandra up, and rode all day until my little heart was content.

I lost all respect for Pastor Leroy Thompson, and wished that he had told me anything but the reason that I couldn't ride because I am female.

He could have told me that my bike's too old, scare it won't make the trip... or that he and his men were riding to Mississippi, which would have been too far for me to tagalong... or that they were headed to a meeting and only had a certain time to get there....

In any case, I will not be buying any more of his books...

I thought times had changed.

Apparently, they haven't changed that much.  Very Christian of him to turn down a fellow Christian woman biker.

Hope, sorry to hear of your encounter with the men's club, naw it wasn't Christian to turn you down for what ever reason.
Clearly points out what we all know, "Pastors are just men" with faults of their own.

Lord knows (get it ;)) where they were headed and you probably didn't want to go there anyway. Sad commentary on the times.

LOL!!!  It's a shame that you see a mixed crowd like that and it turns out to be worse then the typical Harley bunch.  I can't imagine why bikers get a bad rap.  ::)

I pulled up to a trafic light next to a guy on a mid 80's 650 this summer.  I said to him that it was nice to see someone else on an old school Honda.  This prick rolled his eye and said,"I'm buying a Harley soon, this is just a starter bike for me."   :o  I wanted to reach over and smack him!  Then I got a nice warm feeling with the thought that he probably needs a Harley to get laid and every time he rides that Honda it just reminds him of that.

Hope, there are stupid insecure people everywhere.  Just remember, with out those folks there would be nothing special about being independent and secure with who we are.  Keep on keeping on, and screw the rest of them.    ;)

A lot of churches hold "marriage camps" or "couples weekends" or whatever.  Sometimes, part of the program is to break off into groups so they can talk more freely about some things they don't want the other sex to hear.  Men and women bond differently, have different points of view, feel and see things differently, etc.  That's probably part of what was going on, but he should have been more cordial about it.
I believe you'll find that most people get into psychology and the ministry as a subconscious way to deal with their own problems.  If they're successful, it makes them better counselors.  Often times, though, it doesn't work.

To quote Dear Abbey; "The people in church are usually the ones who need to be there."

As a PK, I can fervently murmur, "Amen".

I would like to stick up for Pastor Leroy Thompson.

Most mainline Christian denominations are having trouble keeping and attracting males.

Doing special "GUY" things - like this scooter ride - is a way to get men back in the pews.

Having a female join the group would cause big time problems back at Pr. Leroy's church.

I have attended similar outings (ball games - canoe trips) and my pastor would have done the same.

Hope - don't take this the wrong way.

Next time you are in church, count the men, then count the women - you will understand.

Well, as a Jew, I can't comment on what's Christian or not.  ;)  But as an educator and community worker (yes, and a medic and...) I have to defend occasional 'ladies only' or 'men only' activities.  Gender-only and mixed activities all have a different kind of chemistry.  That's neither good nor bad; but it is often the case.  Specific-gender activities aren't necessarily for everybody; but there are plenty of people whom they serve well.  Our little religious group here in Santa Fe has some mixed and some men only or women only activities.  Most folks participate in a little of two out of three.  (Haven't met anyone who would qualify for all three, but let's not go into medical anomolies.)  Many educators think they have noticed a different social dynamic in classroom settings in high schools and colleges as well.  I don't know that it is very well researched.  In really traditional Jewish communities, for instance, most activities will be separate, including school.

Hope, I suspect this gentleman meant no real offense.  Maybe he just didn't explain himself very well.  The other fellas deferring to the pastor may have been out of respect for him, or discomfort at excluding you.  They may have been afraid that you would take it as you did.

In the end, it sounds like they weren't the bunch for you anyway.  If a group really wants to exclude me, I probably don't really want to be with them, either.   :)

IMO the pastor is a jerk and Hope is better off not having ridden with them. She doesn't need to step down to that level to ride. If those guy's are that insecure they need more than church.

I used to think the same way, then I moved down south for a year.  Hammond, LA in fact.  I got to tell ya, I learned what snobs we yankees are.  Just about everyone I meet beat me up with hospitality.  Don't let those southern draws fool you either, most of those folks are sharp as tacks.  In the end, the heat is what drove me back home to WI.

And I beleive that the church is having trouble attracting both genders, specifically young people.  I believe it is because of idiots like him.

If this really was a men's retreat then he should have explained the situation better.  there really is no reason for the Q&A about attending church unless these sort of retreats are extremely frequent and common in his church and by attending you would be aware of it.  He could have handled the situation better but if you really have found his books useful to you then maybe you owe it to yourself to try and met with him and get a better explaination.  There are several people who are gifted and moving public speakers when they are prepared but stumble over their own tongue when put on the spot.  all of us have had bad days and have been less than kind to random people we have incountered on those ocassions.  But if you have found his words inspiring and helpful before then maybe he deserves a second chance to explain himself.  And maybe if he is a bit of a local celebrity then maybe he needs the ocassional confrontation to bring him back down to earth.

I have had to much to drink so if this is hard to follow I apologize.

+1 on that count, although I must admit religion is big in the South, sometimes overwhelming in its scale.

Don't feel bad Hope, I would have failed the Pastor's roadside "test" after the second question  ;D  I'm sure he was silently cursing you every time you got an answer right, until he finally gave up and said, "We don't want girls in our clubhouse."  I've never been a big fan of southerners whose first question is, "Which church do you go to?"

Hope,

I would like to say first of all that I am sorry that this happened. Here is what I would suggest you do. First, if you haven't already done so, would be talk to your pastor. Second of all I would attempt to contact Pastor Thompson. I don't know anything about him or his ministry but normally individuals like himself don't get into positions of authority like you have described by being rude to individuals of either gender without it being widely known in the public. I would guess, and only guess that what he was trying to say was that he would love to have you ride with them at a later date but at this time this was a male only function. Anyone on this site would be a liar if they said they haven’t attended a gender specific function. And as a little side note, as innocent as it may seem how would it look for you to be the only female riding with a group of males while all their wives were back at the church. Even if you didn’t return with them to the church the community has eyes and I know I wouldn’t want to try to explain that to my wife.
