Routing suggestions for fuel line with filter
« on: January 23, 2008, 04:02:58 PM »
I am wrestling with getting the fuel line routed just right on the '78 750K. I have added an inline clear fuel filter.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way/length to cut the hoses and route it all from petcock to carbs?

Thanks!

It would depend on which type of filter you have(small, large, right angle fittings or straight). A small filter with right angle fittings(my choice) can go just in front of hole in carb mounting bracket that fuel line passes through, the right angle fitting points right towards the petcock.

If you have a small, straight filter you can try splicing it in at the rear of the carbs, just above where the fuel enters carbs, as long as it doesn't interfere with the choke. Otherwise you can route the fuel line up and over the carb mounting bracket and have the filter hanging in front of carbs.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Why?  Whats' wrong with the very fine mesh filter on top of the petcock?  It works better than in lines and it is self cleaning as the fuel sloshes.

I just happen to have the same bike and we are indeed lucky. I have used both the straight and angled. I prefer the angled since as was said before the angle points right at the petcock. I use a urethane fuel line which is self clamping. I put a short  piece of fuel on the filter and push it onto the inlet between the carbs. Then you can attach a piece of line to the top of the filter and route it to the petcock, use a razor blade or scissor to cut it to lenght. With the straight filter you will have to make a gentle bend in the line to avoid kinking. Since it is gravity feed system as much angle down toward the filter as you can get is important.

The bottom of my K&N inline fuel filter sits practically at the bottom of carb 3, the line feeding the filter from my petcock is a hair over 4" on my K8.

A quick side note on the clear fuel filters...
I have a 750 k7 and when I got it...it had the small conincal clear one with the pourous metal filter...worked fine! When I restored the bike...I replaced the filter...the parts house was out of that type, so I picked up a cylindrical one with the paper element...worked fine....UNTIL...I ran to the end of the fuel and switched to reserve.
It never picked up fuel...seems the cylindrical one formed an air bubble in it and basically vapor locked. There wasn't enough head pressure with the fuel level so low to push the fuel past the air.
It wasn't a hot day so it wasn't actual fuel boil...just an air bubble that formed. I though this was just a one time occurance but the next time I switched to reserve it did the same thing.
What made this a BIG issue was where it happened. Normally the bike will give a bit of indication that it's starting to run out of fuel...this time it just quit. Unfortunately!!!! I was on the interstate at 75mph with a Semi right on my ass!!! The bike quit like you had turned the key off...so it caused a very tense few seconds to get the bike to the side of the road and not be run down by the semi!
Moral of the story....the conical shape on those filters is there for a REASON! It seems to prevent that bubble from forming and preventing gas flow.
I have the in tank filter and a clean tank...but even with that, I still get some residue in the clear filter...so I like to have that second level of safety to prevent having to clean the idle jets all the time!

My K&N is the conical clear type.
