1975 CB550F Gas Tank
« on: October 28, 2007, 08:06:52 PM »
I recently purchased a 1975 CB550F that was supposed to be completely restored.  It turned out to be a mostly cosmetic restoration.  Unfortunately, there were quite a few problems with the functionality of the bike in addition to poorly done cosmetics.  (Never buy without inspecting the bike. This was an eBay purchase).  I have fixed most of the problems except the gas tank.  It developed leaks from multiple pin holes on the bottom of the tank.  Whatever he used to initially repair the tank seems to have dissolved.  Since it needs repairs and a repaint, my painter suggested trying to find a good tank that didn't need repairs, just painting.  He is not sure the tank is repairable and it costs $100 to dip it just to see if it needs further repair.  (He also does restorations, mostly of Brit bikes).

Over the last three months, I have been trying to find a good tank.  So far, no luck.  Does anyone know what years and models use the exact same tank as the 75 CB550F?  I want to do a correct restoration (which is what I thought I purchased).

Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks....

550F tanks are one in there own. There (the F's) longer than the K's so don't be fooled.

The Cb550F used the same tank from 75 to 77. (all the production years)
The Cb550K from 77-78 used the same tank as the F model.

Where are you as I think I have one somewhere
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks for the responses.  So I can search for a 1975 - 1977 CB550F or a 1977 - 1978 CB550K tank and they are exactly alike?

I live in the Dallas, TX area but am willing to pay shipping for the right tank.

Thanks again.  I really want to get this bike up and running.

Yes, except for color. And, the K tanks will have a chrome trim strip along the bottom edge.  Removable.

i have an orange F tank (stock condition) in great shape i might be willing to part with. i've held onto it forever, but it would be a good candidate for a proper restoration. PM me if interested. i'd look around yourself on the metal cleaning. it only costs me $45 to have one dipped here in portland.

TT's right about the tanks. the '77-'78 K models have the same tank, just different paint schemes.
