Take the engine out of the frame yourself and give him just the engine. Should cut down costs. But what exactly is wrong with the current transmission? Worn gears? Bearings??

Good luck,
Andy

Where are you located?  I have an F engine that you could have the trans out of for $50 plus shipping.  If your close, you can have the whole engine for $100.

As Andy asked, what's wrong with it.  The lower tends to last forever as far as I know.

He told me that it was just worn out which I do belive knowing that the bike has over a 100,000 miles on it,about pulling the engine that is hard to do right now with me in Birmingham and the bike being in New Orlens,I may take you up on that offer on that 50 dollar transmission but I can not do any thing till after Thanksgiving.

Even with 100,000 miles dosent mean it should be worn out....what are the symptoms? Dosent engage in gear? Crunching sounds coming from the tranny? More details  ;D

For reference - my K2 was opened up and the lower half looked like new - no wear at 50,000 miles....of course all depends on those 50,000 miles....25,000 of those were put on by me and wasnt abused (much).

Make sure to take into account all of the parts that he'd be including.  If he's a good mechanic he'll have included the gasket kit, fresh rings / hone, maybe bearings.  You can't slap a tranny in these without a complete rebuild and might as well put fresh stuff in so you don't have to do it again for another 100K.
As a point of reference, I rebuilt a friend's 750 for him.  No labor charge cause I just enjoy working on these bikes.  With just parts including a worn tranny bearing, gasket kit, rings, carb kits, and some miscellaneous stuff it ran him about $300 from what I can recall.  It took me at least 30 man-hours (I'm not a pro, only worked on it in my "free" time, and blacked out the entire engine).  That would be about $23/hr based on your mechanic's labor estimate.  Figure he would really charge about $50/hr and that's about 14 hours labor.  Doesn't sound too far off to me.

The bike runs fine for a little bit but once it gets warmned up it will not engage any gears,no crunch sounds just will not engage. ???If you park it and let in cool down for about 15 mins it will run great for about 5 mins and than it will no longer engage.
Thanks for that brake down Civlle, never realy thought of it like that.

It sounds like a possible clutch issue? Can you be sure the plates are not worn and stick when they get hot? Or.... What oil are you running and has it been changed recently?

You have probably thought about this already but just in case.....is Bud in NO doing the work for you? What does he think?

cheers

I hope you haven't taken offense.  I can't speak for others, but for me it seems that I must go through all the things that ARE NOT wrong just to find out what the problem really it.  ;)

If you want the trans, let me know.  Cvillechopper is right though, new gaskets, etc. are a must.

Lol no offense taken,I to am the same way.
Still have not made a decison about what I will do with the bike,I am no wencher ,when I take things apart and put'em back togather I allways have parts left over,so attempting this my self would not end well there would be lots of cursing and throwing things ;D.I might give it to my son he has been wanting a bigger bike and he dose have a real mechanical oreinted mind,or I might just part it out and put the money into my k6 to get all the little things it needs done.
Gone to have to think about this for a few days.

Good thing he is a buddy & you have known him for a long time!! :o

I dont know what you guys are talking about (but sounds like a full rebuild or a freshening up)..

Hate to tell you though,if you have to do a tranny swap it can be done in a day or less, no need to touch the topend, and you only need 4 gaskets.. turn engine upside down, remove dyno, shifter & clutch cover, unbolt  lower case, swap shafts. Dont forget there are a couple bolt on the top side.

I sheared a CI countershaft sprocket at the drags, when I pulled the clutch in it welded  itself to the shaft.. that held though the next few gears. Till I did my next burnout and dry-hop and then.. all neutrals!!
So I had to split the cases to swap 1 shaft..

I'd agree if it weren't for the engine having 100K on it.  If he's got the engine out of the frame already, might as well know for sure that it's fresh all around.  But that's just my opinion.

I also forgot to include the cam chain on my list of stuff we did for my friend's bike.  w/ 100K on yours it might be worth looking into a primary as well if you do decide to go for the complete rebuild.

True, with the engine out the tranny can be swapped in short order as 754 describes(don't forget to take the shifter mech. apart). Once the lower case is removed, the tranny can be replaced pretty easily without disturbing much else. There are a few seals and o-rings you may, or may not, want to replace while your in there as well as check the primary chain/tensioner.

Ledbetter,
Good for you! I did the same thing about a year ago - removed my K2 engine, split the lower case and replaced a final gear bearing and retainer clip. Pretty easy doing that. Then reassembly with minimal gasket sealer and it all went back together ok. Even managed to rebuild the gear shifter mechanism - not as hard as I thought!  My only "problem" was that the engine wouldnt go in gear after re-assembly -seemed I had missed the gears when putting it back together. Im not super-mechaniclly inclined but I had a go....thats all you can do and worst comes to worst you can give it to Bud to finish it off should you get stuck!

I would second the other guys comments about replacing the cam chain tensioner though - both my engines (50,000 and 65,000 miles very much needed the cam chain tensioner replaced - that rubber was worn out!! Easy to do with lower half split.

Good luck and keep us posted!
cheers

Ah yes I think so...the piece that bolts into the lower case and has a rubber wheel at the end which is placed against the chain....

Thanks for the correction!
