Another New Guy -- From Portland, Maine
« on: November 15, 2007, 10:28:03 AM »
Hello All,

Been hanging around here for a while and just thought I'd register and introduce myself.

Name: Bob Carpenter
Location: Portland , Maine

Current bikes:

1974 CB750 Cafe project - motor was toasted, everything else is pretty decent.

1974 CB750 Restoration in process, really nice all original , including saddlebags and vintage police style windshield, just over 10k. Will be done in a few weeks +-.

1976 CB750 Parts Donor- fairly complete parts donor bike, only gauges, seat and bars are not original.

1978 CB750A - Completed   - Bikes name is Otto, a twist on the Auto.... 8) . I really like this bike! Did a flip flop metallic paint job on the tank and side covers.. looks different from all angles. Also have 2 more tanks and 2 sets of side covers for it, that will be painted one stock Candy Blue and the other probably pearl white metallic ...

Looking forward to asking lots of questions and sharing some stories!

1st question: I have seen a few pix in the gallery of a really nice CB750, that someone has done with a custom rear fender and a solo seat and touring handlebars .... I want to do something just like that with the cafe 74.

Can someone ID what the parts are and where they came from?

Here is the link: http://gallery.sohc4.net/main.php?g2_itemId=27866

Thanks for a great website!!!

Hey Otto!

Welcome from a fellow Portlander.  I have a black 78 750F with a white windjammer on that you may have seen about...

I just picked a great running 76 750K with full touring gear.

Do you have pics of any of your riders?

Cheers,

Ben

I live right near Deering High School, and work over at Fairchild Semiconductor.

Ya, we should definately get together.

I need some help pulling an engine  ;)

Cool having another local on the forums...  There's a few other SOHC Hondas around in our area but no forum participation that I've seen.

Cheers

U bet I know Howard.   I just bought his 750K!!!

He told me he sold a bike which ended up in your hands.  Is this one of your riders?

Sounds good Bob,  we'll have to meet someday after work at the Great Lost Bear for a brew or two.

For all you beer lovers the GLB is a treasure of Portland... --->   http://www.greatlostbear.com/beerlist.html

Ben,
That is too funny! I saw Howards K6 many years ago in NH - he rode that thing all over the place! Yes the K2 he sold me is now my "cafe" K2 - it underwent some lower end surgery a couple of times but apart from this the top end has never been touched. The bike is better than ever now! In fact I passed the 50,000 miles mark on Sunday....

Say hello from me!

I think the Boston SOHC group will have to come and sample the Great Lost Bear come Spring....if not before! Road trip!

cheers
Andy

Was Fairchild called something else some 15-20 years ago?  I lived up there for a few years in the late 80's working at BIW and had a girlfriend who worked at a semi-conductor firm near Portland before she left for a job at Bowdoin College.

Fairchild set up shop in South Portland Maine in the early 60's.  The fabrication plant there is the 2nd oldest continuously operating semiconductor plant in the world.  The oldest is in Mountain Top PA which Fairchild also owns, built 1 year before this one.

Fairchild was purchased by Slumberge, then by National Semiconductor. It was spun out of National in a executive leveraged buyout 10 years ago.  We managed to hold on to many of our orignal patents through all the mergers and transitions.

Will do Otto,

I'm taking a couple days off from work in the next couple of weeks to start the teardown on my 750F.

Maybe we can meet up for beers sometime next week.

Cheers,

Ben
