exhaust question-removing stuck bolts***HELP***
« on: November 25, 2007, 02:47:58 PM »
Hello All,

So I've got a problem I'm sure others here have come across, yet I'm struggling to find a solution.  So here goes:

I'm in the process of removing the exhaust collectors so I can clean out and replace the old copper gaskets.  Cylinders 1 and 2 were a breeze, but 3 and 4 are not going anywhere fast.  The problem is with the bolts that tighten the collector to the cylinder head.  On cylinder 3, it appears that a previous owner either tried to remove the bolt too or tightened it to the point that the head of the bolt is trashed.  I try to use the philps-head screwdriver with no luck.  Same for cylinder 4, although the bolt heads are in better shape.  The bolts refuse to budge!!!   >:( >:( >:( I've used WD-40, an electric screwdriver, cursing, etc, but I'm not getting anywhere.  I plan on replacing the offending bolts, so whatever I can do to get them removed without damaging the head or the threads on the cylinder head would be great.

How do I get the offending bolts out when the bolt heads are trashed?  Any and all suggestions are welcomed, I appreciate it!

Thanks!

I always use an impact driver for those stubborn screws and so far this hasnt failed me yet. Good luck!

Cheers

Thanks.  Is an impact driver a tool that requires using an air compressor?  If so, I don't have an air compressor...

I would go with Andy. The impact driver really digs into the screwhead while twisting. It also shocks the stuck part which helps. I would let whatever penetrant you are using sit for a day. This gives it a chance for it to penetrate and it gives you time to cool off.

Whew..Thanks.  Is an impact driver something I can pick up at Sears or Home Depot?

Yeah, I guess I was more angry than I first realized.  I'm learning that it takes twice as long or longer when, during the course of your project you have to correct the prior owner(s) mistakes.  It seems like 1 step forward, 2 steps back.  It is what it is I suppose.

Thanks!  I just did a Google search and it seems like it won't break the bank for what I want to get accomplished.  It's hard to be patient when these unforseen problems crop up.  Oh well, part of the process right?

Bikebuff,
We have all been there - those frustrating moments when its seems there is ALWAYS something to do....but believe me it does get better. Im not much of a mechanic (more of a rider) but if I can rebuild a CB750 K2 from the ground up including opening up the bottom end of the engine then believe me anyone can! Impact driver will become your new best friend on these old phillip screws  -best thing you can do is buy an allen head bolt kit to replace them all! You can get this from Ebay or look in the FAQs here and find Jim Spillane (Forum member) who sells these kits at a very cheap price - hes a super nice guy as well.

Good luck,
Andy

Put heat to it (propane torch)

Or (if the exhaust parts were still installed), you could run the motor for a few minutes to get teh head nice and toasty. Of course, everything else will be toasty too. It was a trick I leaned for exhaust manifolds on cars.

That is why I suggested you let the WD or whatever soak till you cool off.  Everything I do in haste or frustration, I mess up.

Sometimes turning a bolt to tighten it a fraction before loosening will help it to loosen.

If the Phillips head is truly gored out, you may have success in making it fit a straight blade, if you have a file or grinder, dremel is great.  Otherwise you could take the head off and when the parts are out of the way, there area  number of screw extractors available.  Sears has them, Irwin has a good set...more than likely, Sears is made by Irwin...

I needed my dad's impact wrench for every screw on my '65 dream back in the 70s, even though it was only a few years old. I got the wrench from him, just in case, but have not needed it on my 350 even once. I'm always amazed when they just turn.
