Tip: Not all pods fit 74-76 550's!!! List of pods that fit
« on: January 03, 2008, 12:48:57 PM »
Soon after I posted pics of "Project Jasper", folks began asking where I got those pods.

Of course I learned the hard way when I bought the wrong ones.....

These cone shaped, tapered ones, are too deep for the bike.  The pod will be squished and will hit the frame.  DO NOT BUY THE LARGE TAPERED CONE SHAPED 39MM PODS.

Here is an example of what the smooshed tapered pod will look like:

Sorry, wpnssgt_usaf...  you took the picture, so I couldn't resist using it for an example.

Sooo.... what kind of pod do you need?  You need the shorter, ROUND pod or a mini pod!!!  I had to order mine from a local bike shop because I couldn't find it on the internet.

Here's the links you need:

Round pods that fit:  retail price $58.95

Product description of the tapered pods you need:
Emgo part number is 12-55735.
CB350/400/500/550 Four cylinders. up to '78
NOT TWINS! This size has a smaller overall body to fit these models.

Hope this helps someone save some time and money....  And hopefully you will only have to buy 1 set of pods instead of 2 sets of pods...  and you won't have to learn the hard way like I did!!!

But not always.  Also on a 500/550 (specifically a 500).

And the tapered ones that do fit.  Here is the post that came from:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=24352.0

The round ones were K&N -don't have that part number.

The tapered pods are emgo 35mm I got at cycle-re-cycle part II http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm Their part number is EMGOPOD35, but I doubt that's the actual emgo part number.

Dunno.  Dustyc said they work.

I used the 38mm round ones (not tapered) on the 76 550F and they worked.

Thanks Hope.

I've got ones that "don't fit" on my '78 550K and no. 4 is up against the frame and coming apart.  >:(
I figured there were some out there the right size, now I know where to find them.  ;D

This is exactly why I started this thread: in hopes of saving someone the same trouble that I went through.  You will want to note that the first picture in this thread are the pods that did NOT work on my 550.  The ebay seller represented that the pods would work.

I think the best bet is to avoid those pods that are in the 1st picture.  Look for other alternatives that have been listed in this thread.

I also bought some long Emgo pods for my 1976 cb550. The outers were too long, although the box said they fit cb550's. I got them from ebay so I needed to make them work. I cut about 3/4 of an inch off the back of two filters ( a handheld grinder with metal cutting disc worked perfectly), pulled all the filter and screen stuff off the rear metal caps and scraped the old epoxy off the caps. I then epoxied the cap back onte the shortened filter with JB Quick. Filters now fit nicely and the resulting staggered look (long inner filters and short outer filters looks pretty cool) I don't think anyone mentioned that the choke handle also needs to be modified for pods.

I don't think anyone mentioned that the choke handle also needs to be modified for pods.

The choke handle did not have to modified for the round pods that I have on the 76 550F.  The rubber is soft and supple so it gives...  No reason to modify the choke with these round pods.  Others may be able to offer more input concerning the tapered pods.

After looking for my own pods and seeing how a few are making the mistake of ordering the 39's vs the 35's, I started a conversation w/ someone from BikeBandit.com.  I let them know the 39's won't fit the 550's (probably just the 750's) and they will be updating their site soon.

Thanks dustyc!

Cycle Re-cycle is currently selling pods on eBay using this exact picture, but listed as 3.5" long, which would be too long for a 550. Measuring my carbs tells me I need a 38-39mm pod, and the pod listed as fitting the 550 on the CRC website is supposed to be a 35mm, which would be a stretch to fit on my '76 carbs.

I found these on eBay:
Pods on eBay

35 or 38mm diameter, available in red or blue, and 7cm (2.75") total length. Sounds like they will fit perfectly on a 550. To order four and have them shipped to the US is roughly $38, the seller pointed me to this auction to order more than one at a time and get the combined shipping discount:

Here are pods short enough to fit, but expensive:

http://www.fastcycleparts.com/showproduct.aspx?siteid=2&productid=6102&CategoryID=0&SectionID=0

why so much more for the 550?  ???

If I install pod filters, will it take a lot of work to tune the carbs? I do have four carb tuners, but will it require A LOT of tweaking? Or just get em so they're all adjusted the same and that should be fine?

I remember reading another thread on hear about pods, and people had trouble with them at different speeds (50-100mph)

There's a ton of info available - it's not just about syncing the carbs, but about rejetting and tuning to ensure appropriate air/fuel mixture at all speeds and throttle positions.

For those that actually buy the wrong PODs :D do what I did, pop the tops off the two outer PODS and cut em down with a pair of scissors then glue your tops back with a strong silicone. works like a charm.
