What tires Should I get
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:45:33 PM »
I have a 1975 cb750K that I am making a cafe out of. I have found some Pirelli MT66 and was wondering if anyone else has used them or what tires they have used. I am not interested in any Chang-Shin or Dunlap TT-100's. Thanks in advance.

Bridgestone 45's or the Dunlop GT501's - Both are V rated and plenty for your Honda. They aren't cheap and nothing period correct about either one.

I took your comments above as meaning you didn't want cheap and you didn't want period correct/vintage design.

i love my meztler lazertecs.  have pushed my ride pretty hard (corners, NOT rpm) and, even tho i have no freakin' idea where my contact patch is, have developed some level of confidence in cornering this ole beastie.  don't dare to push it much further, as i have 1/4in strips on the front with 3/4in on the back.  rear end hasn't skipped out yet but am leary about the front washing out even tho i'm told it won't as long as i'm on the gas. ;)

raised the forks 10mm for a little quicker turn-in, transitions well as long as the road is bump-free.  just under 4k in 2006 and will last 2 more season at least.  very smooth, zero vibration, no cupping.

I use the vintage sport contis on my GS840,
they work good for the type of riding that I do

Good question.

I am readying my recently acquired '78 CB750K8 for the road. It has a mere 8,000 on the odometer and is very clean.

My buddy who drives a new GW suggested I go the sticky tire route. I agree that they are safer in the long run, but would they look dumb on a 30 year old bike?

Don't get me wrong; I am not a slave to sentimentality and period correctness. Just wondering what others have on their CBs (those that use non-period correct styles)

I have run Bridgestone Spitfires on all my bikes, but I think I've grown out of them.  They're don't feel sticky enough for my increasingly aggressive riding style.

For my next set I will invest in either Avon or Pirelli.  I've never seen anything but high marks from both of them (though they are quite a bit more pricey than the old Bridgestones....)

I run Bridgestone Spitfires on my '73 750K right now, and they're a pretty good tire, and, if you run the stock sizes, the edge of the tire is just barely past the point of where the stock footpegs fold in... ;)  I just put a set of Avon's new RoadRiders on my '75 750F, but with the great Washington weather, I haven't been able to really try them out, but, from the little that I have gotten to ride on them, they seem like they'll outperform the Spitfires, hands down. And, at under $100 per tire, the price isnt too bad either.

Avon tyres, best in the world.

"Speed rated to 112mph/180kmh, the Speedmaster MKII has the curved tread profile and ribbed pattern so typical of classic bikes. It gives ‘classic’ handling characteristics but with the benefit of modern rubber compounds. When you fit this front tyre it’s best used in conjunction with the Safety Mileage MKII.

When you’ve got a Speedmaster up front the Safety Mileage MKII is what you need on the back. In its broadest fitting – 5.00 S16 size – it has a different tread pattern to other sizes, but all share performance characteristics in tune with older bikes, while enjoying the advances made in rubber technology."  (taken from Avon's website)

However, it's a matter of personal choice and I have never tried them on a cb750.

Got a really good tip from Honda Team road racer about 4 years ago..regarding tires for older (read: SOHC 4's) bikes..

Lots of profiles, materials of newer tires are great..but not available in sizes that fit older bikes.

Exception: Avon Tyres..who use modern materials, technology to make tires that fit older bikes.  Avon Venom..and Super Venom (if you're actually going to race) are great.

Without any serious suspension mods..they will actually grip and lay over in turns (if you so desire) @ 45 degrees..enough to drag your knee..if brave enough.  I'm not.

I never expected that skins alone would make so much difference in handling..and just plain confidence that they will stay put on the road.   This is all talking about tires on '68 through '78 bikes mind you.

Those Chang-Shin (or whatever)..are almost garbage..and unsafe..I believe.  Have seen "new ones" that were out-of-round by over 1/2 inch (try riding @ over 45 MPH on those!).

Try Avons..you won't be disappointed.  And they're less expensive than Metzler..and many Michelins.

I just purchased the Metzler Lazertech for my 19 front and 18 rear CB 750 cafe project also.  I would have liked to gone with the Avons, but the only problem was I could not find a rear tire to fit, unless I laced up a 16" hoop to the rear?  I could be wrong, but man I looked everywhere on-line (my local bike shops are useless)....

You will always have chicken strips on a stock cb750 with metzlers. I have about 1/2 of an inch on my rear and I drag hard parts all the time.

I swear by metzler lazertechs....I swore by the m33s before...metzler just makes an awsome tire, I even used to have comp Ks - the race tire for the street. I also run avon venoms on a 78 and 79 supersport - awsome tire. For performance riding you can't beat it either.

I understand Maxxis tires are on the same level as cheng shins.  they're a cheap "emergency get me home" tire, nothing more.

I'd kill to have 17" rims for 120/70's then I could put pilot powers on this beast.  GRIP galore. you'd be draggin pipes, or pegs, if not actually frame parts, before you hit the edge on those.

My personal favorite option,  Kenda K671's.   They're a relatively inexpensive, yet decent tire.   decent tire for sport touring, or interstate riding.

Im looking at the idea of using Maxxis Sport Max tires on the triple as i said before...more or less using the Kawi as a litmus test for them. Other wise i will probably be using Pirelli Diablos in 17" sizes on the CB550 since i will be using new aluminum rims on that bike.

I have those on the '72 750 and I must agree. Not so good!
The 750 Cafe has Avon RoadRiders and having used Avons for some years now on my ST1100 and a Virago 1100, I would not hesitate to recommend them

Okay, now the question is what size. I have a stock frame/suspension. I would really like to run 140's but have hear some fitting issues. I am not running a stock rear fender. I have a solo seat and made a rear cowl. So height will not be an issue. However, I dont want to have the tire rube against the chain. has anyone done it? It is a 1975. I hear the later years 77+ had a wider swing arm and sprocket carriage. So none of that helps me. Thanks in advance.
