Learning to WRENCH online!!
« on: January 18, 2008, 09:12:49 AM »
Anyone notice this..

People now learn to wrench online..

that is they dont even read the manual or even get one..

just plunge in and take off parts.. till you get stuck.. then go online and ask for help.

I am not up on this method?? do they then build a manual with printed copy of what they see online?? Is that how it works today??

I dont mind helping people.. but at least hold your breath when you jump in the water...FFS!!

Yeah, it's a brave new world.  Guaranteed to give us plenty of future stories for the APO thread.

People have been doing this since the first chariot needed fixing.

Back then you would run down to the blacksmith and say (while scratching your head). "Hey Therinomous!  What do I do now?"

Now we have this new-fangled way of reaching out to a group of people who know much more and can say "Hey, I'm stuck -- so what do I do now?".

It's much more fun to shout out "What's the best oil for my bike" and watch what happens then do a thorough search for previous posts.  This way people are communicating directly with you.

I know that I've learned more here than my three manuals combined.  It's the little tips that are the true gems, like in the recent thread about Engine Repair for Dummies.  I loved the different ways people get springs off.  Most of the ways were not in any manual.

Therinomous, (oops I mean 754) you're sounding a tad curmudgeonly  ;) Did some water get in your oil?

Thats entirely normal up here at this time of year. Its a medically recognized condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by a Vitamin D deficiency from lack of sunlight.  Most of us get it to some degree in the winter, and most return to normal when the sun starts showing over the horizon around mid-Feb.

I hear ya UpperLake.

It's supposed to hit -10 F this weekend here.  I don't think I'll be spending any time out in the garage...

I am definitely suffering from SAD today. It's -3 degrees with a -30 wind chill today, lovely biking weather...NOT!
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.
