The local dealer ordered an Oil Pump O-Ring for my '76 550. When I picked it up and eyed it, it looked fine. When I put it in and took out the old one (leaky) it didn't fit, it was too long, (circumference wise) so we put it in anyways, see if it would fit. Too much slack, and I lost pressure as a result. I'm replacing it, I got several at a hardware store today because I don't trust the dealer and don't wanna wait for another wack part to come in and pay them for it.

You guys have any experience buying replacements at chain department stores, or hardware stores, etc? One of the five assorted sizes I picked up today may fit, but it needs to be rounded in shape, as well as thickness, and I'm just wondering if anybody's picked up a replacement, but not at a dealership or bike shop.

I have a leakey pump too, and havent got around to fixing it. As for o-rings, most all the o-rings you'll find in a hardware store are going to be inch sizes. More than likely (I'm almost positive) you need a metric size. If you measure the groove that the oring goes into you can call an oring supplier and they can spec the correct one for you. You may have to buy 10 rings or more though, as some places have minimum requirements. You can find specs for the inch sizes all over the web. http://www.oringswest.com/
If you call em, ask for engineering and tell em you have a static face seal with low pressure. Please post your results, as I probably need the same part you do. (77' 550 K)

I'm going to pick this up.  My cousin has it and it helps all the time not only on a bike but around the house if you need an o-ring.  And its Metric too.

Would something like this cover most of the "O" rings on Hondas, or, though metric, did Honda craft pretty much custom sizes for the bikes?  ???

At this point, I'm not really sure.  I've had GREAT luck fitting standard size "hardware store" o-rings on my CB.  I've used them to fix the petcock and also fork top bolt oring this weekend.  I just bring the size I have and eye it up at the store.  works every time.

But this kit should work fine, I don't think Honda used any really fancy o-rings when making these bikes so they all should work.

I replaced mine recently on the 500, same as the 550.
I got a 1.5mm O-Ring (0.0595"), Can't remember the diameter, but it was slightly smaller than the pump, When it stretched over it also reduced slightly in diameter and fitted like a glove...No more leaks.!
However, the B>>>>d charged me 5.00 for it 'cos he knew I didn't have much choice, anyway it would have cost me as much to drive, park etc to the next place.

Hey Chris,
I picked up a set like this at the local autoparts store for $12.00 includeing the Vermotn tax. Came in handy when I needed toreplace the orings on the tappet covers. ;D

The dealer sold you the wrong one cos Honda dont sell the cover "O" ring as a part!!
