Topic: First Gear bog down

I've always had this issue with my bike since day 1. 

When taking off in first gear the bike seems to bog down alittle and then jump into life.  I can here the carbs sound like they are over aired.  I've been running pod filters becuase they came on the bike.  Could that be the issue, I think it probably is.  The bike runs fine soon after I start going and through all gears. 

I been toying with the idea of putting the stock air box front part (carb intake) on and using a larger K&N filter mounted to it.  (bought this exact setup on Ebay last year)

if it sounds like it is sucking air,i would say its lean.

Idle for a couple minutes and look at the plugs. maybe take a pic of them.

Richen the idle mix a bit and repeat. You are probably lean and a small adjustment on the air screws will probably take care of the issue. I suppose make sure timing is ok and sync is correct.

What bike are you troubleshooting, the 550 in the avatar?

What is the throttle position when the "bog" occurs?

Can you characterize the plug condition amd color?

Is your exhaust stock?

Have the carbs been rejetted, needle position changed?

Where is you pilot screw setting?

What is the set up number stamped on the carbs?

The K&N is a better setup than pods IMHO.  But, it may still be less restrictive than the stock paper type.
