CB750 Headlight Ears Replacement
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:59:27 AM »
I have a new set of chrome 1976 CB750 headlight ears coming on eBay. What would be the steps or procedure for this replacement? I am assuming you have pull the handlebars off and work from the top.

No, actually you remove the forks, slip out the old and slip in the new and reinsert the forks. Of course this entails a few other details, like removing the wheel, brake readjustment, etc. Not too bad a job really. You will need some way to support the front-end off the ground. I use two tie-downs over a rafter in the garage.

Thanks for the information. I would have started on the wrong end.

It also gives you a chance to inspect and assess the top of the forks. If not too pitted, some cleaning and a thin coat of grease will help keep further corrosion at bay.

Don't forget that washer that goes in the clamp slot, that avoids overtightening. It is not to protect the fork, but to protect the stem from breaking if you overtighten it. With the washer in place, being the right width, you can tighten up as much as you want.

Raul,

Good point also, the washer has a shaved edge. If the shaved edge is not facing the fork tube, you will never get the tube to slide into the upper. It may want to rotate on you so watch for that.
