Man that looks like one sweet bike.  What all are you gonna do to her?  Restore her to her former glory, resto-mod or hot rod?  Looks fairly original, what all is she missing?

Plan on making it a sweet daily rider. A genuine 1980 Gs1000S Wes Cooley Replica found just 5 miles from me! I'll go all through it, keep it stock as possible. Collectable and oooh, that racy paint!

Are you going to dye your hair blonde to match the bike?  ;D

I have a modern Suzuki and have sworn to myself NEVER ever have another Suzuki, modern or classic. But I could make an exception with any of the 70's suzis.

Very nice Andy, I've got the (most collectible) 1979 "small port" GS1000S in bits, (retirement project) and a 1981 GS1000S as my daily rider. (plus a GS750E, GS1000E, and a GS1000G)

Great bikes, excellent brakes and handling, with bullet proof engines. Even the "softer" US market CV carb equipped models, (EPA enforced, other markets got big Mikuni 33mm slide carbs) can do 145+ MPH.

Do yourself a favor though, if you want to go fast, take the OEM fairing off and hang it in your garage, it makes high speed riding scarier than it should, with poor aerodynamics inducing "tank slappers". I don't know anyone who rides his fast, who didn't take the fairing off.

Have you visited "The GS Resources" yet? I'm "Terry" there, and I do oil coolers for GS bikes too. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

As others have said, "Way to go there 736!" Nice Score indeed! 8)
Never had the opportunity to check out a Suzuki four, except a GS500 long ago. Always heard about their abilities though. Enjoy! ;)

Comparing the 79 and 80, the factory rearsets, bigger cam, CV carbs, slotted discs, seem the most obvious upgrades, so what makes the 79 more collectable; being the 1st year? Any idea how many were made each year?

736,

If you give that GS the same treatment you give your other restos, that bike will turn out amazing.  You certainly have a way with vintage bikes.  Good game on that find.  I just hope your Hondas don't gang up on the Zook and tip it over.  Those K0's have a nasty attitude. ;D

You got it in one Andy, it was the first year. It's like comparing the K0 and the K1, the K1 is probably a better bike in many ways, but to the collector, it's just the second model, and not that "collectable".

Also, the first 16 valve Katana came out in 1980, which pretty much eclipsed the GS1000S, sadly. (the big port GS1000S was actually faster than the first 16 valve engine, but the Katana's looks sold by the boatload.)

You can get all the production stats from The GS Resources website Andy, it's great. Here's a pic of my 1981 model, I just "blew the cobwebs out on a 50 mile ride to Steve K0's place, geez they're a great bike! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Caught a 1979 today, incredibly doesn't need a thing, includes orig spares. Would you believe a '79 and an '80 GS1000S found within a 10 mile radius where I live in the same week?

Wait just a minute here! We ARE talking Fish, right? Well, where I come from, there's a LIMIT of BIG FISH that you can keep! Tell you what, you just send ONE of those suckers to me and no one will ever be the wiser! ;D ::)

Seriously, very nice work indeed, picking up on TWO of those BIG Suzukis.

The 79 will be my new daily rider, it was very well taken care of and on the road this past season. I'll put the orig pipes, mirrors  and seat back on it (came w/ the bike!) eventually. Refinishing the engine covers about all it needs. Even the tires are like new.
The 80 has some issues that need addressing, either I sell (or trade) it as-is right away to the right person for the right offer, or totally mint-it-out w/ a frame-off restoration. This is an important Suzuki, it may well be the most collectable of the entire 2-valve GS series, so its got major potential worth doing. And that blue-white paint-scheme is sooooo COOL(EY)!
