can you make your own broomstick bars
« on: February 06, 2008, 01:38:15 PM »
I didnt know if this was safe or not... since there is no bends in broomstick bars...I was wondering what I could use for them...

7/8" DOM thick wall moly tubing should be more than strong enough.  It won't have any finish on it so it will have to be chromed, painted or powdercoated.

I found some really nice seamless aluminum tubing that I purchased for clip-on replacements.
Almost all modern clip-ons are made from aluminum and I would use that.

Jeez, go for broke and get some 3/4" hardwood dowel. With a nice marine varnish it will be great!

Why would you want "Broomstick" bars? They're not attractive at all, and aside from the "uuurgh" factor, not particularly practical either?

Manufacturers put bends in handlebars to make them comfortable for a humans ergonomics over long distances, so why would a straight length of pipe somehow be an improvement? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Egronomically speaking....my broomstick bars on my old SuperHawk gave me a bloody nose once.

We won't discuss how many times the bike rolled over, though...  ;D

Attractive? long distance?  cb650 bobbers' question is about safety and what he could use to make them.  If he's asking, he is probably considering them for his bike and if he's a limber young fellow with  shoulders  about as wide as the bars, they just might be ergonomically correct for him.

actually I am pretty young and strapping so i think my body could take the bars. I have bars with a very slight pullback on them now with no rise. I like the feel of them but they still hit my tank...i think I might just make some stops to keep it from hitting.

I think the point is someday he will be dead, so he might as well be happy with his bars while he's here!

Latest parts bike had broomsticks on it, Those things were just plain nasty to ride around with, body angle etc wasn't bad, the bars just felt like they twisted your wrists inwards.

bought it for parts, but decided to re-ring it after finding it actually runs decent, took it on my normal test loop, a roughly 3 mile residential run with no cops, and when I got back my wrists were hurting, which is bad, because I had clubmans on my rider at the time, Now I have drag bars, and they're very comfortable compared to the broomsticks.

after all the negative feedback on feel of straight bars i may just stay with my slight pull back and put plumbers clamps on the stops to keep them from hitting the tank.

Good idea mate, while Uppity doesn't care about his fellow CB'ers, I do!  ;D

Hey have you ever seen a pair of "Laverda Jota" adjustable handlebars? I don't want to call them "Clubmans" because that doesn't do them justice, they're a beautifully engineered bar that you can adjust up or down, from a "touring bar" to a "clip on" and are totally adjustable to suit your own ergonomics, so you can have "looks" and "comfort" without compromise.

Sean Condon (SCondon here) has them on his hotrod CB750F3 "Sum#$%*" bike, and they look fantastic! I think RAASK still makes replica's, and when I find another pair, I'm gonna hang on to them! Cheers, Terry. ;D
