350F Chrome fork cover.. How to remove?
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:48:17 PM »
I'm just now getting around to the forks on my bike... :D

How do you those chrome fork covers come off?

I know they either twist off or, I saw a small notch that can be used to pry them off....

  but mine are stuck good.

What's the prefered method of removal???

Got em'  :) :)

They're a press fit, had to gently knock them loose with a rubber mallet and once they started to move, a hammer and thin punch on the bottom did the rest.

I'm disassembling the forks on my 350 today. I see no reason why they can't be left off. Just make sure to keep the dust seal in place.

how intensive did it look to get them off? do you have to remove the entire fork to get them off?

It wasn't too bad to get them off but you do have to go slow and be very careful not to gouge the fork or the chrome cover (less of a concern for you if you are just discarding your chrome covers). Hopefully your forks and covers aren't too rusty or corroded and they come off easy enough.

Unfortunately the whole fork does have to come out to take the chrome cover all the way off. You can see pictures of what I've been up to with my forks at the end of my project thread here:http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=20822.120
