Stripe decals on tank
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:18:15 PM »
Ok so its about $40 for the decal stripes on an early Cb750 and over $100 for the big wedge shape decal on the K3 and newer bikes. My question is what has anyone tried to repicate the stock decal? I was thinking about masking, doing the gold or black center and use either pin stripe tape or stripe it by hand. The early one seems easy but what about the later style with the big black wedge and white/gold/black pinstripe? I dont have it in me to pay 100 plus bucks for a vinyl one. I do have access to a vinyl cutter however. What have you guys done?

I have a K4 that is currently being painted, I ordered a set of Black K2 decals.  I kind of liked the simplicity of them over the K4 design, but more importantly they were waaay cheaper.  I don't see what would be so hard about making your own decals if you have the proper uv resistant vinyl.

To me it looks like the hardest part would be getting it sized up right. The vinyl is the outer stripe. the inner is black paint. the stripe gets overlapped at the lower corner of the tank. I think if you have a plotter and time to fiddle with it, I dont see why it would be too difficult.

I would think that you could do it with pin striping.

If you haven't painted your tank yet, you could do like me and paint the stripes on. Spray the stripe colour as a base then mask of the stripes and paint the tank base colour. then clear coat the whole works.

When I lived in New Orleans I striped a set of stock pinstripes on a k6. The owner was a painter and he did most of the thicks stripes with his gun, I came in and basically did small clean up work. It was a lot of work for such small details but it is worth it. Right now I have a mask I am making to do the stripes for a k3 sunrise orange tank I am going to have painted. A buddy of mine is going to lay the base colors and then I am going to come in with my airbrush and bang it out (since I can no longer spray at home). then he is going to clear it.

should be fun.

That is where I bought mine, I guess I bought the K1 Candy Gold set, stripes only.  It costs $34.95, but they hit you with 14.00 shipping too.

Yea I got my first set of decals offline. . . with shipping it was almost $50 and they took dam near 3 weeks to get here from canada. Nearly every site i saw with them for sale said they came from their "supplier" they dont have them in stock so basically I dont feel like paying another 50 and waiting for 3 weeks. Plus, I have about 8 tanks to paint once it gets warm enough in Michigan.
The pinstripe sticker tape from the auto parts store or online looks ok, but I think i'm going to either try striping by hand or getting the pinstripe kit from JCwhitney. they have  a nice set up with a pinstripe paint pen that comes with a magnetic strip you lay down next to where you want the stripe then the pen has a wheel that follows in a grove on the magnetic strip, seems easy and should be a perfect stripe. The only problem I see with this is doing the point where the stripes come together. I have to look into how wide you can get the pens also.
Any other ideas?

I would mask tank and paint the black areas then use gold and white striping tape for the K4 style.  It's fairly easy to find in all different sizes and very economical...  I think 3M makes it...  another company is Cal-stripes or something like that.   Only real hard part is matching the corners, but if you just bought a roll of stripe tape, you've got enough for plenty of mistakes.

Try a hobby shop. Model planes use a striping tape that's thinner, stretchier and stickier than the automotive vinyls. It can turn tighter corners, conform to textured surfaces better and the adhesive doesn't creep when it gets hot. Its also more fuel proof because gas model planes are always covered in fuel and oil.

From a painter....

3M tape.

Its plastic.

It comes in whatever width you wish.

Its the only thing I have found that leaves a smooth parting line.

Pinstriping of course is something different.

The only thing I dont like about the 3M stripe tape is when you make a corner or point where two stripes come together the joint looks pretty crappy.  I'm leaning towars doing the stripes with pinstripe masking tape and then either stripe it by hand or airbrush. Then there won't be any seams.

I'm talking about the plastic type 3M for paint on stripes.

DOn't overlap it.
