How high to rev a 550?
« on: March 15, 2008, 03:57:10 PM »
So I dropped a tooth on the front sprocket, which I feel was a good decision. Bike's a lot peppier around town now.

I am, however, revving pretty high on the freeway--naturally. Just wondering, because I know these 550s have issues with valve float, how high I can safely rev the bike.

I do a lot of mountain rides, and, though once I get to the back roads, I'm not usually above 60 that often, getting to the roads on the freeway requires an hour or two at 80. With this bike set up as it is, 80 would probably be 7-8k rpms (I'm sure you geniuses will know exactly how many rpms it would be with a 18 x 4.00 tire on the back and a 17-tooth sprocket). Is it safe to rev it that high for long periods of time?
