Are coils handed?
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:29:59 AM »
Im going to order some new ignition coils for my 500/4,

can anyone tell me if they are handed or are they all the same (just different part numbers)

david silvers site only sells genuine left hand ones, as the shops shut til tuesday i was hoping someone could tell me on here first as im not sure how technical their "sales hotline team" are!

i cant see any reason why theyre different?

The plug wires are different lengths from side to side. If the left hand coil is for 1-4, the wires should be long enough and can be trimmed
a little shorter for cyls 2-3. Not sure if left side is for 1-4 tho. Go to
www,crotchrocket.com and look up your bike on the parts fisch to confirm things.

edit... the primary wire colors are different from side to side as well,
one coil has blue wire, the other has a yellow. probably better to
get aftermarket ones or good used ones

Electrically, they are the same.  Wire marking, length, and primary wire color is different as mentioned.  If the wires are long enough, to reach the spark plugs they will work.  You could always color tape the primary wire for the "other" side.

left hand coil is for 2-3 cylinders so that puts me back where i started.

Ive found some aftermarket ones but theyre £70 a pair + VAT +P&P.

I saw these on another thread

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/honda-cb750-chopper-dyna-ignition-package-w-acel-wires_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35594QQihZ021QQitemZ310032869178QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

someone said they were expencive, but they work out at about £150 thanks to the good conversion rate at the moment. That seems pretty damn cheap when dyna coils from what i found are about £100-150 and electronic ignition is about £90. Just the postage to the UK on that kit..

I presume the above is fine for a 500/4 too?

3 ohm coils are not really recommended for the 500, as the charging system is only 150 watts @ 5000 RPM and about 30-40 Watts at idle.  The stock 5 ohm coils draw about 2.5 amps (33 Watts).  The 3 ohm coils will draw 4.3 Amps (55 Watts).
The stock 500 draws around 10 amps whenever the key switch and headlight is on.  Adding more electrical load will drain the battery faster at idle and require a higher RPM before the charging system can restore battery charge.
You're probably better off with 5 ohm coils, unless you spend all your ride time above 3-4000 RPM.

Cheers,

Dave Silver does only list one side genuine BUT he sells pattern ones as well and he used to have complete assemblies with the brackets

just gave them a ring and their website is correct, they only do genuine LH ones which have the shorter HT leads, when they're gone they're gone.

They cant get RH or aftermarket anymore "the manufacturer isnt suppling them anymore" is what i was told.

Better go aftermarket then!

Ive asked the chap selling the "kit" in the USA about the coils and he does the same kit (3 ohm coils) for both 500 and 750/4's
