bar end signals
« on: April 01, 2008, 01:43:09 PM »
do you think bar end signals are suffiecienct for front and rear....safety wise....and how hard are they to hook up...i am assuming you have to drill a whole in the handle bars never seen how they hook up...

No, I don't think they're sufficient, safety wise.  Your body could easily obscure the view of the signals from drivers behind you, and they might not even notice them if they could see them because it's not where they'd expect them to be.

As far as wiring them in, just run the wires through the bars along with the switch pod wires, unless the 650 wires are run outside of the bars in stock form, which now that I think about it, they might be.  If there's a slug in the end of your bars, then you'd have to drill through it to run the wires, but that might not be too easy considering the thickness of some bar end slugs.

if you put the signals in the ends of the bars - where do you put the mirrors. ;D

As a front signal I think they are ok. they came stock on some BMWs (the ones before there were DOT sandards on these sort of things). I would put something in the rear just to hedge my bets (I wouldn't rely on them as my only signals) but other than that should look cool.

I feel the more signal lights the better. I ride where there are a lot of young drivers on cell phones as well as a large percentage of senior drivers. So I think bright standard signals plus bar end signals plus side cover signals as well as rear signals can only be improved with a laser that shines directly into drivers eyes... :D

But how will you aim the laser while you're driving?  Will there be separate lasers for front and rear?

You could do what my brother did years ago and install aircraft landing lights.  Those are nice and bright :D

Then again, you would also learn the lesson that my brother did, which is that Johnny Law doesn't take too kindly to such things :D

Heh, should have mentioned this was on a Jeep CJ6 and not a bike.  He said he did it to dissuade tailgaters, and called it "The Treatment" lol.
